Well the difference between the Programmes Live+VOSDAL figure and the actual tape-checked Live+VOSDAL figure is around 170k, so I'm assuming that difference will maintain through the week. The difference may reduce through the week, but I can't be sure.

Strictly (like the live X factor shows) has live voting, if you're someone who wants to vote for your favourite dancer/singer you have to watch it live.
Live sport isn't something you can watch the next day, as the score will be plastered all over the TV news and newspapers! Or Facebook. Somebody might say that this week's episode of Doctor Who was great or terrible, but generally won't give away plot points, whereas people DO celebrate/moan about sport immediately afterwards!
"Terrible defeat" "Great win" "5 goals for Aguero" "Referee cost Scotland" etc

Doctor Who by contrast is something you can watch later. As I noted earlier, its live viewing figures have gone up and down at exactly the same rate as Casualty's, a show which I imagine has hardly any social media presence!

Those figures are for the slot.

The reported tape checked figure for Saturday night was said to be 4.63m which would be 220k lower. So you need to minus somewhere between 170k and 220k off all the figures to get the actual number.

Day 1 shift is about 0.9m regardless.

Thanks for explaining Claire.

The Girl Who Died had an AI of 82.

You're welcome,

That AI is not very encouraging. I had a feeling that might be the case though - the general reaction to the episode seemed to be 'meh'. There's been a definite dip in the AIs since s7. Capaldi's era has yet to break 85 whereas both Tennant and Smith's eras are littered with high 80's figures. Even in the much maligned s7b there was an 87 and an 88.

Tennant had low series and high ones (84.4-87.9), Smith was incredibly consistent across all three series (86.2,86,85.9). Capaldi's two series are currently averaging 83.3 and 83. Obviously still good figures but a noticeable downward trend.

A final rating of 6.05m for Before The Flood.

The Magician's Apprentice has just popped its head over the parapet in the iplayer top40, back in at number 40, perhaps this indicates a renewed interest from the wider audience following the last couple of episodes.

This series of Doctor Who is showing downward trends in several areas. AI, overnights, consolidateds and timeshift.

Only so long this can be ignored as "everything is fine" by some people.

Blimey that IS low. I'd presumed around 6.2-6.3m. That meant it timeshifted only 1.67m.

I read somewhere that AI numbers were recalibrated in 2013, though I don't know if it's true. Indeed where do these AI numbers come from, you never see them for any other show? It's as if Doctor Who fans are the only ones who follow ratings daily and log AI numbers!

The IMDB ratings for this series have all been decent, above 8

Lowest timeshift since Journey To The Centre Of The TARDIS apparently.

Maybe we can just ignore for now the overnights, catch-up, AI, share etc etc that is either indicative of failings within the show, indicative of poor scheduling or indicative of nothing worrying whatsoever (take your pick). For every simple view that it's all a bit poor there seem to be a myriad of reasons why it's all perfectly understandable.

Instead should we look at where the show comes in ranking on saturday night and where it comes compared to all other drama. Does doing that give any encouragement?

Just trying to convince myself that shedding a million viewers since series 8 isn't anything to worry about.

I like Capaldi so hope he's not the cause. But if he is, then he is. It's a shame they thought doing a Sixth Doctor in series 8 was such a fantastic idea. Muddies the water when wondering whether it was that mistaken route that people don't like or simply an older Doctor - regardless of how he plays it/is written for.

I'm pinning my hopes on it being a combination of the scheduling (too late for Doctor Who, time of year etc) and all the stuff Dr Thete etc say about how telly is all over the shop with falling numbers, competing demands etc.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Why might I say such a thing? Because it's not our job to worry or chase ratings or get panic about an episode being rated 8.2/10 instead of 8.5/10 and so on and so forth.

If DW is still pulling in good numbers and is rating well enough against the competition for the powers that be in the offices of the decision makers, then that's a 'them' problem. If they see it otherwise, then they'll take action.

No. It definitely is my job. The ghost of Michael Grade appeared to me in a vision and told me so. He said if I don't get it sorted then it'll get canned and he's coming round to smash up my Dalek Invasion of Earth DVD. It's really important I understand what's going on.

They axed the Friday night repeats I'm guessing those numbers were pretty horrendous?

Thanks, but what I meant is who publishes them, as I've only ever seen AI numbers for Doctor Who, and have NO idea how they compare with those for other drama shows

I've been asking for weeks in this and the TV forum. Everyone dodges an answer, especially those quick to post specific figures for Live+VOTSD+4 figures first thing in the morning.

In another thread, it was even suggested they dropped the only remaining BBC3 repeat because they're closing down BBC3 next year... so decided to broadcast repeats of Top Gear in the same slot instead. Yeah, that makes sense...

I think it's safe to assume after this year's dropped ratings for Saturday nights, the utter disaster of the initial BBC1 Sunday omnibus and the only remaining repeat being a sign language version in the middle of the night on BBC2's signing zone, the Friday BBC3 repeat must have been got very poor ratings to be dropped after just a few episodes into a flagship BBC series. Doctor Who News always posted the ratings and AI for this repeat but haven't once this year - before it was axed.

That really is the depressing nature of this "debate" at the moment.
it would be really interesting seeing what the BBC3 repeat was doing this year.
think its safe to say must have been dire numbers

After re-asking specifically about the Friday night BBC3 Doctor Who ratings on the TV ratings thread in the UK TV forum, the only reply I got was about Top Gear, not one word about Doctor Who.

There's no way all these people know such specific figures for the Saturday night BBC1 showing and everything else on multichannel TV, but not the Friday BBC3 repeat. They're only people on an Internet messageboard, why do they feel such shame about posting them?

There used to be a Sunday repeat too.

Thanks Yog

They might be a bit out this week as the overnight was actually lower and it started a bit late.

Thanks Tom. Hopefully Isambard will stop tearing his hair out now.

It's not every day the editor of DWM comes to sort things out!

Again presuming that's 170k-220k out due to the timing issues I make it currently sitting on 5.8-5.9m.
