In many ways this puts in to context how overnight ratings can be misleading in the world we live in now. There are so many ways to watch the show other than on the night in question that really the overnights are not representative of the shows popularity these days. I don't think any other show on tv could get a time shift like that one.

I don't think EVERY episode will get that sort of time shift, but I think they will remain very high.

How do these figures compare to the specials (Christmas and otherwise)?

And it doesn't include PC-based iPlayer viewings (but does include VM ones).

If you go back a few pages, just before we got the overnights for the 11th hour, I did post figures for the specials and some other analysis...

I THINK this episode might sneak in to the top 10 most viewed, but I'll need to have a look later to confirm.

The I Player ratings were at the 600k mark within two days, so it could easily be at the one million mark now....

It's still in the top 10 even now over a week later...

I saw last night there were three DW-related shows in the top 10 in i-player!

In terms of the official BARB chart for w/e 11th April, DW comes in 4th place. It would be third if the BBC opted to include HD ratings in it's final figures.

Interestingly, we continue the run of the last SEVEN episodes of the show being in the top 10 most viewed. Even if there is another massive time shift for TBB that run will come to an end next week, but it's been an impressive run.

...and it's actually been a run of eleven top ten places for the show - with next week being a virtually guaranteed twelfth. Right now it's only 0.7 million behind the current tenth show. Or 1.0 million if we discount HD.

No your misunderstanding me. Seven of the top 10 are the last seven new episodes that have aired - from Journeys End through to The Eleventh Hour.

Good spot re: planet of the dead, I didn't add the hd figures on, duh!

I think the high timeshift number are fantastic and it just shows the amount of people that use these services is increasing.

sky plus, virgin plus and virgin catch up services (plus any other I am missing) all mean that people don't have to be sat at the tv at 6:15pm (or whatever time). There is also no setting up of a video to record, and running the risk of cutting the end of if earlier programming overran. Sky+ type services can bet set to record with just a couple of button presses and you can even do it over the phone.

All of these services have increased in popularity over the last couple of years due to the subscription and installation costs falling and I think Sky and Virgin will soon drop their standard service and only offer the HD/+ services.

Put with that iplayer beta wasn't launched until the end of 2007, so we had 3 series of Nu Who where we didn't have the option to watch it later or legally re-watch/download it over the net.

I really do think PC based iplayer numbers and HD numbers should be taken into account for ratings as it is where the world is going now. I fail to see why the BBC refuses to class HD in their ratings as it is an extension of their service and is used by people watching it on tv instead of the SD service. Especially when the SD and HD versions air at the same time as the viewers will be unique and not people that watch both if the HD version is aired later (like this coming Saturday).

Anyway, good stuff all round. I will be very interested in the ratings for the rest of the series, they are not something I have really paid much attention to in the past but it will be interesting to see what happens.

Ah - got you...! All these superlative stats - easy to get muddled as to which people are pointing to.

I think there needs to be a review of the way viewing figures are compiled. I almost think there is a case to be made for ditching the overnight figures, because it's these that are quoted in the media even though they are becoming less and less reflective of the audience make up.

In the context of DW it's not so bad because it's an established show, but some newer programmes get rubbished in the press based on overnight ratings that may not be entirely reflective and the media then never correct the wrong impression if this is the case.

While waiting for last nights ratings, some interesting info on iplayer views:

The Eleventh Hour has broken the BBC's iplayer record for most views in a week , with 1.27 million views. It has an excellent chance of becoming the most watched programme on iplayer ever - the current record is held bt an episode of Top Gear with 1.6 million.

Also, The Beast Below got off to an even more impressive start than The Eleventh Hour did with 666, 780 views in just two days.


In terms of overnight ratings for series 3 episodes, so far they have been as follows:

Series 1 - 8.36
Series 2 - 7.41
Series 3 - 8.00
Series 4 - 6.90

Overnights of 6.2 million apparently.

Seems a little of the low side, but then the time shift for the Eleventh Hour was so massive it's hard to put that in to context with the figures for other episode 3's, because the timeshifts were a lot smaller then.

ETA: DW was second for the day behind BGT, but a good million clear of anything else for the day. So in that context it's pretty good really, although the share dipped below 33% which is a bit lower than ususal.

I think we need to see what the final figures are before we say too much on DW figures these days...
