Seems likely.

It would be good if viewers used the Christmas special as a taster for season 10 and perhaps came back for the 2016 premiere (whenever that is).”

Not especially, but the highest in 2015.

The Christmas episodes always get higher ratings than normal episodes. Last Christmas for example had a Final of 8.28, and L+7 of 9.62

It's Capaldi's third highest - behind Last Christmas and Deep Breath.

True, I'd misread the comparative data, though the rest of my point is still correct, it does seem that Doctor Who in the UK has a core audience that watches it regularly, but doesn't attract casual viewers so much now.

In a way that makes sense, I don't watch Call the Midwife or Eastenders once a year on Christmas Day, so maybe Doctor Who shouldn't be geared around casual viewers either?

Not a mention of Doctor Who in the BBC News article about Christmas Day's final ratings.

Doctor Who was 7th, though Sherlock is likely to top all the Christmas shows

To be fair, it's not like they mention the whole top ten and omit Doctor Who! They don't mention anything below #6.

The positive news here is that it's only a drop of 0.5m from last year which is much better than the average drop for this series as a whole. That could suggest there's still a chunk of those missing viewers from this series that could be won back.

And the xmas was on a lot earlier than the normal series, suggesting The show is on to late as PC and Moffat were suggesting.

Netflix US is removing Doctor Who from its streaming service from next month.

Netflix tweeted: "Good and bad news. Doctor Who is staying on @NetflixUK, but our dear Doctor will be departing on Feb 1 from the US. Content comes & goes-a variety of factors are considered. It's goodbye to an old friend, but a promise to care for David & Matt."

Netflix is very secretive about, well, pretty much everything but apparently does an enormous amount of research to support any decisions. For instance, Netflix turned down Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May saying they weren't worth the money. Which I have to agree with.

Does anyone have any background/industry rumour about this Doctor Who decision?

Not sure where they got the figures from but this is the AI of Series 9 split by age (plus male/female).

According to this the 16 - 34 year olds almost constantly gave the episodes the highest AI out of the three age brackets while Women usually voted higher than Men.

I remember Netflix's renegotiation with BBC Worldwide was a very last minute one, last year. This time it's leaving Hulu aswell.

Quote:
“A BBC spokesperson told us that American Whovians will still be able to stream seasons 7 – 9 on BBCAmerica.com and that the series will still be available through Amazon Video, iTunes, Google Play, and more VOD platforms. However they added: “We hope to announce a new digital partner for Doctor Who shortly.””

I was surprised that older audiences liked it so much less but then I realised it was also one of those skewed axis graphs and that the difference wasn't quite as dramatic as I'd previously thought. It was still puzzling though to see it so unappreciated (relatively anyway) by the old timers!

Why Bizarre?

Not that I care in slightest about AI's but as someone who is 60 this year and been watching since 1963 I reckon even 76 is too high, it was convoluted nonsense.

Well it was the most critically acclaimed episode of the series, and is the second highest rated episode of all time on IMDB.

But it also got the second lowest AI of season 9, only beaten by Sleep No More.

I personally think it was more of a 'Marmite' episode than the newspaper reviews/comments on here would have us believe. Certainly not the sort of episode I think would coax back the 1.5m who've switched off although I think, within fan circles, it will be called a classic.

But then, speaking as a fan, I am sometimes a little bemused by what gets labeled a classic by fans. Caves of Androzani is (for me) only exceptional because its a regeneration story. Beyond that, pretty bland. But Doctor Who Magazine readers voted it the best story ever.

I think the critical reaction will have a lot to say for how the episode is remembered as time goes on. It certainly seems to be one that many people are cherishing.

My original comments were about over 55s, who clearly hated it according to the AI scores, and it was their score of 76 that was the reason why it finished with the second lowest AI of S9. The 16-34s gave it a score 9 higher!

I suspect that such an episode would attract many NEW viewers to the show if they were made to watch it, with its adult themes of inner torment and the incredible performance by Peter, it's as far away from "kids TV" as the show is likely to ever go
