I think people are still not really understanding that the way the ratings work has changed a bit since there are now so many different ways of watching.

This is the totally true, recording shows on virgin and sky has become the norm, so the overnights reflect that. At least you do get a chance to watch an episode at any time not like a few years ago when you had to make do with a vhs recorder.

Over the next few weeks we have quite a few big audience draws (some spoilers here):

- What looks to be a much more action-packed second part to an already great story
- Bill Nighy and Vincent Van Gogh
- Comedy with James Corden
- The finale, which could feature Cybermen, Daleks, River Song, Rory, and more.

I don't think there'll be a problem in keeping the viewer's attention.

Cybermen and Daleks together again? please tell me you jest?

Corden? no thanks.
Bill Nighy, now you are talking, he is quality.

Well Cybermen are definitely involved. And the Daleks are certainly possible considering how open-ended Victory of the Daleks was.

And he's not really my thing, but James Corden is very, very popular. A lot of people who wouldn't normally watch will tune in for him.

And Bill Nighy is a living legend. Cannot wait for him to show up and I think he might pull some new viewers in.

and of course the Van Gogh episode being a Richard Curtis episode will be attractive to a lot of casual viewers as well I think.

This week was the series five equivalent to Silence in the Library - we took a bit of a kicking for reasons outside of the control of the show, but it'll be fine. The time shift will be big I think, and it'll take us safely in to 6 million territory and I hope thereafter we will be heading upwards again viewer wise through to the end of the series.

I'm actually quite impressed by how damn sensible people have been about the overnights this week in this thread, actually! I expected a lot more hand waving than this!

Spoiler
It's kind of true but not in the way you think...

Think of "the monster mash" and you'll get the idea...

I've not missed an episode of nu who, but there is no way I'm watching Corden. I'd be thrown off this forum if I really told what I think of him.

I don't really care what he is like in real life, as long as the episode is good, tbh.

That said the concept of that episode doesn't appeal to me much, it's the one I am least keen on, but you never know, might be a real gem.

Oh really?! Sounds interesting. The Cyberman never really did it for me but mashed up with a Dalek could be verrrry interesting.

Spoiler
Yeah I am not a big fan of the cybermen either, tbh. Word is that there will be lots and lots of recurring enemies and adversary's that appear in the finale, connected in some way to the crack.

Can't you watch a VHS recording whenever you like?

VHS quality is poor though and it's a lot more complex to go to the trouble of programming a video than to click a button and watch a show whenever you want to. And like it or not VHS is almost extinct, most stores don't even sell 'em nowadays!

I've never had a problem with it, and I still watch videos a lot. I don't have Sky+ and hasve never felt the need for it. People seem to be becoming fussier and lazier with every passing year-how long does it take to load a VCR?

why bother when there are easier options out there? You can't blame people for moving with the times. And the ease of access has boosted the shows ratings, so can't complain on that front at all!

True. But I'd still rather video it. That way, I have it to watch any time I want, and can keep it as a backup copy after eventually buying the DVD box set at Christmas...

The overnight viewing figures are way out and not accurate when you compare them to the official barb figures released a couple of weeks later. I would hazzard a guess the viewing figures for last night will be fairly low because of the beautiful hot weather we have at present.

I have no doubt that the Time Shifts will be very high for this story....its been a huge pattern this series...and will definitely increase.

Is it even possible for you to make a point about what you like doing or whatever, without making a belittling comment about others who don't follow your godly ways?

And the strange thing is, were not videos and tapes made so people's lives would be easier? in terms of knowing that they could set something to record and keep, when there was nothing of the such before? Surely if Sky+ makes someone lazy, then when the videos were invented, it was also to help a lazy world from actually making the effort to watch it or wait for a repeat...in fact we could take this argument in all corners of new technology....we are all so lazy for using cars, instead bikes, or even horses, or even our own legs to get to one place or another. And come on, what about planes...laziest form of transport.

Fine you use videos....so did I untill last year....but say it without making a social comment

You sound like my brother! The last time I used my VHS was in 2008. I don't have Sky+ or V+ but watch iplayer to catch up, that's fine. Anyway, DW is repeated on Sunday and Friday.

I agree with you, but mostly what i have highlighted.

If there's one thing I've learned these last 7 or so weeks is that the overnights for 'Any' episode of Doctor Who are nearly on average 1.5m off the final rating.

I expect Amy's Choice will get a final rating of over 7million tomorrow and The Hungry Earth to get a final rating of around 6.5million.

Nothing to worry about by any means. the ratings, which as been pointed out by other posters, are up there on average with series one.... And I'll be amazed if next weeks episode doesn't go back over 6 million.

Plus it looks like the weather will be back to normal next week... Well in London anyway. You can check your local forecast on this website. Just type in your location.

It is an ongoing irony that the best episodes often don't get the best viewing figures. Last night was my favourite so far but it WAS a very hot sunny day (which really does affect viewing figures especially in these days of 'series record' options on SKY+ and V+ boxes). I have no doubt the final figures for Hungry Earth will be very good, and deservedly so. It just depends if the press try to score some anti-BBC points.

Yes, but you don't have a physical copy of the episode with iplayer. You don't get to keep it.

IIRC only 25% of main telly's are connected to a PVR be it Sky+, Freeview+ or whatever. So a fair few viewers must be still be using their VCR's.

dvd recorders have taken over that market. Like I said, most stores don't even sell vcrs anymore. It's a dying market.

I'm no expect on the breakdown of the PVR market, but 25% seems very very low to me.

It surprised me too but apparently only a third of Sky subscribers have a Sky+ box and that's the most popular PVR.
