I'm not lazy. When our VCR croaked I bought an HDD instead. Got rid of a load of clutter and the thing shows me a list of recordings by name that I can pick from a list. Neat. Quicker and easier was just a bonus. Picture and sound improvement was nice (and undeniable even if it isn't your top priority). Wouldn't have thrown out a functioning VCR just to get it, but wouldn't go back to tape now.
Do you wash your clothes by taking them down to the river and beating them on a rock? If not - how lazy!
And I notice you like to video tape shows so you can watch them at a time of your choosing instead of what the broadcasters happens to be showing? How fussy!
I think that viewing figures need to adapt
We are in a world where we record nearly everything and watch it when we want to
DVD sales is probably a more accurate measure of a shows worth than viewing on the day
I recorded eps 8 and watched the last 20 mins on the Sky HD service
When the season box set comes out I will be buying it like the other 4 seasons and specials box set
And we also have rental to contend with - tv is also in the rental catalogue
With the choice of buying renting and recording what sort of chance has viewing the program at the time got ?
All of this is nothing new to any of the broadcasers over here or in America and abroad.
So viewing figures in my opinion need to adapt - use it as a benchmark I guess but too many shows get cancelled based on this old time method and change I believe is the only way forward

Probably not quite applicable to Doctor Who though. The overnights give the first hint, the final figures throw in the timeshifters and the AI tells them how much it was enjoyed (as opposed to simple goggled at).
Doctor Who famously has an unusual mixture of casual family viewers (they're "fans" but not in the discuss-show-on-forums-watch-the-black-and-white-episodes way) and the kind of cult fans that spend a load of boxsets. For shows like Family Guy (am I right in thinking this is one bought back due to dvd sales?) there isn't so much of a large-but-casual viewership. People who like it REALLY like it. American TV perhaps don't do the Appreciation Index thing. If they did they wouldn't have had to wait for dvd sales to work it out maybe.

hehe, it's all right. I went to the Doctor Who news page after realising that no one had got the finals yet, thought they must be out by now. which they were.
Looks like you had the same idea too.

And that puts it... uh... third on the New Who episode 7's to date with The Long Game and The Unicorn and The Wasp beating it. Not bad at all especially considering it was a bit more of a puzzle than action episode.

Yes I vsited them and couldn't see anyone had posted it...
So that mean its a timeshift of about 1.35....not bad at all.considering that the Iplayer result was high....

It is a brilliant result.....and considering that it was really quite a warm day then...but I don't think the weather was that great for the Long Game and Unicorn

Plus the Long Game was coming off the back of Dalek which didn't hurt (and Simon Pegg guest starring as well). Lord knows why Unicorn & Wasp (oooh, good band name) got that high, I don't remember a rain of frogs that day....

Actually if you take away the HD then the timeshift for BBC is only 1.26 million.....but it was simulitanously cast so really we shouldn't take away the HD

Sorry I'm not trying to argue, i think I may have got the wrong end of the stick somewhere here...
okay to clarify....on the overnights, inc HD Amy's Choice got 6.2 million. In the final Ratings, inc HD, it got 7.55 million...a timeshift of 1.35. On yoour previous post you said that (and I wasn't sure what the exact overnights for the BBC alone were untill you mentioned it) if you take away the HD you get 5.8 million....so for final ratings, not including the HD, was 7.06 million, which is a timeshift of 1.26...so I was a little confused how you came to the conclusion of 1.75 as a time shift. But maybe I am reading the point you are trying to make wrong...
but yes, still great results...
For a series that's supposedly "lacking" compared to the previous four, it's actually doing pretty well.
