I take your point for the period of NOW with the BBC however Dr who was cancelled for multiple reasons in the 80's and viewing figures and the BBC controller at the time were all part of the equation

My pet hate are tabloids that say a series is failing based on viewing figures and it was a generalisation rather than just Dr Who.

I still feel Ratings need to adapt, and media need to move way slightly from viewing figurers.

Surely we have all seen the remarks "house drops 1.4m viewers" and "heroes drops to all time lows" and I am betting none took fandom and dvd sales and recording into consideration

So I totally agree with your remarks and hopefully people see mine as the scare mongering / shock things need to be "toned down" as it were

Notes:

1.series 5 figures include simultaneous HD viewing figures
2. series 5 episode 3 did not have a simultaneous HD showing. It did however get 0.38m viewers later in the evening. Total audience for that day was 8.2 million

I player only is added in through virgin media + which you view via the tv, not from the BBC site. The latter is included only in the unofficial total reach for the episodes, that are still used as a tool within broadcasting to gague the total audience a programme reaches.

Speaking of which, I promised a couple of weeks ago some data on the total reach of the series so far.

Total reach = final ratings + first week repeats + iplayer

Up to episode 5:

The Eleventh Hour - 13.23
The Beast Below - 11.25
Victory of the Daleks - 10.35
The Time of Angels - 10.88
Flesh and Stone - 10.63

The data on the other episodes isn't complete enough yet, and even the above will continue to be revised upwards since they are still available on Iplayer

In comparison to series 4, as per request:

Series 4 pretty much left for dust in terms of total reach, which I think reflects more the changing dynamics in tv viewing over the past couple of years.

As has been said before, overnights are becoming a bit on the unreliable side. I think while we can use them as a rough guide, thats all they should be seen as. I think the day will come when they will have to restructure the way ratings are measured, because due to it's immediacy overnights seem to now have an undue importance placed on them be the broadcast media even at this point, imagine a couple more years down the line.....

Honestly, I'm not at all worried about the overnights - the final figure will be very good.

Also, 5m viewers in 1988/89 was a very different matter. Cable/SKY TV really hadn't taken off at all and we only had FOUR channels to choose from.

Definitely been an increase in more people watching thinsg On Iplayer for the first time....I haven't yet done that with Doctor Who, only repeat vieweings....but most other programmes...like currently ashes to ashes...I tend to watch on Iplayer (except the finale)


Yeah the fact that despite it being 4.5 million, the shares speak volumes....if it had 4.5 million but a share of 10%...than that would be slight worry...


but as it stands, its doing well or even better than the last five years!!

So are the iplayer ratings from virgin media only included if you watch via VM+?

i'm not an expert in virgin media, do all vM boxes have iplayer on them? If so then yes, they will be included...but only in terms of BARB members like the other data.

Which shows are more expensive than Doctor Who and aired in a later slot? I'd have thought that Doctor Who was one of the more expensive shows aired due to the CGI involved. I can't think of many programmes in a later slot with that amount of CGI or expense on any channel.

As I said, I have the standard virgin box and can get iplayer, so it isn't just the + boxes that have this feature.

I am not a BARB member though, so really, however I watch it doesn't matter, does it?

I don't know much about BARB I always thought that viewing figures were based on everyone who was watching TV at the time. Not just the ones who were a member of BARB.

Surely if it is only BARB members viewings that are taken into account, the actual viewing figured could be a whole lot more than what they are?

Shame this government are almost certainly going to make the BBC sell Worldwide off to a commercial operator.......

it would be rather "big brother" like to monitor the viewing habits of the nation in that way wouldn't it?

BARB use a statistically representative sample of between 10 - 15,000 and record what members of the household watch and when through the use of a separate electronic device.

And if we all started only watching TV via iPlayer/4OD etc, that would be what would happen!

So the first ep and the Angels 2 parter well up while the rest are pretty close and only ep3 being down by much.

Also the average episode rating so far this year is 8.38m which is well up on all series so far - obviously going to be down a bit after last week though.

yes the series has been performing strongly in terms of final ratings. I still think the final ratings for last week could top or equal 6 million though.

that is excellent.....this is the first series we have had that has had episodes remain for longer than a week...and it shows how people are taking the opportunity to watch it.......viewing habits have definitely changed....

Very hopeful this week - crap bank holiday weather, a later time slot and the second part of a cracking good story!

Last week was a blip - its not as if we had a sharp decline leading up to it.

It was absolutly awafl in my part of the region too!!! But i was happy!!! As it meant more people would watch it!! Ha

It's funny, I am always very upbeat but I'm a bit worried, probably for no reason!

But yeah, if we can hold the same share as last week, I'd imagine a lot more people were at home, especially with a bog night of tv ahead.
