I think that not only are overnight figures becoming less accurate in terms of overall viewage (is that even a word?
) and there is a greater emphasis on audience share, which has remained pretty consistent (albeit a few ups and downs) since 2005.

it's not really a viewer decline either, it's a decline in overnight ratings, the series is doing as well as ever when you look at the final ratings.
I know i said way up thread I was hoping this series could match the ratings of series 3, which was the lowest rated series since the 2005 return, but instead we are well ahead of that at this point. I think it's clear that series 4 will wind up retaining the crown as having the best ratings average, but if we can keep ahead of the rest of the competition, or at least series 2 and 3, as seems likely, then we will have exceeded my expectations at the start of the series...
The thing is that really this series is about laying a foundation to build on again. And it has done that very nicely indeed.
Just going to add in here the average final ratings for episodes 1 - 8 for series 1 - 5. Final series average in brackets:
series 1 - 8.49 (7.95)
series 2 - 8.00 (7.71)
series 3 - 7.54 (7.55)
series 4 - 7.66 (8.05)
series 5 - 8.14 (?)
You'll note that the average for series 1 and 2 declined through the last quarter of the series, that series 3 remained quite stable, while series 4 increased from this point on, though the figure is slightly distorted by the outstanding performances of JE.
