if you haven't noticed the next episode of doctor who will be running alongside the england vs usa world cup match so don't be surprised if the ratings are lower than usual, I expect it'll be getting low overnignths but the final ratings will be better cos people will have recorded it. i'll still be tuning in, I don't have much interest in the world cup since england will probably fail miserably. what will you guys be watching?

I'll probably be watching Who, but my family will want me to watch the football.

What is this World Cup of which you speak? Sounds like nothing very interesting to me.

If that's true, it might actually be a benefit - if people aren't going to be out and about doing other things. Plus there's no BGT.

Well, the match kicks off at 19:30 ... guess what time this weeks DW episode is due to finish . . . ?

The whole rating system is daft anyway. I rarely watch anything at the time it's broadcast, and I suspect I'm among an ever-growing number.

That said, the latest Doctor Who seems as good an appetiser for the Engalnd game as anything else.

England just won the T20 world cup - is there another one on soon (I thought the last real one was 2007 when England got to the final - the next isn't until next year in New Zealand)

I think the only episodes I have watched this series as they aired have been TEH and TBB. And DW is a good appetiser for anything - especially this week with the footy elements in it

I always watch it on iPlayer anyway.

Pity though that it goes right up to kick off. My wife's into footy so will be wanting to tune in a while before kick off. She can't stand all that studio pundit chitchat, but likes to see the atmosphere in the stadium, players in the tunnel etc. We'll probably go down the local to watch it with the rest of the village. Why the villagers don't all gather to watch Who together each saturday is beyond me. (My wife gives me funny looks when I say things like that.)

Timeshift for me.

Remember all those threads about how the ratings are falling because the overnights are low? That's all your fault, that is...

True!

It's not the most convenient timeslot but it recovers remarkably well in the officials - add that to iPlayer and on-demand viewing! People are watching TV shows at times to suit them more often these days. We're no longer slaves to the schedulers.

But if i don't go down the pub I'll be held responsible for the demise of a different hallowed institution! Can't win.

Maybe I can sonic the pub tuner to stick to BBC1 until 7:30. Would BARB come round and count up a pub full to stick on the overnights?

in fairness, unless one has a barb box it doesn't make any difference to the shows ratings.

The total reach of the show shows that more people than ever are watching the show these days, just in more diverse ways. Unlike some people I find it exciting, it feels like Doctor Who is leading the way in the next big TV revolution!

Just as a point of reference here is the total reach for episodes this year, up to episode 7 (data for later episodes incomplete):

5.1 - 13.34
5.2 - 11.31
5.3 - 10.55
5.4 - 10.94
5.5 - 10.71
5.6 - 9.81
5.7 - 9.74

In contrast to series 4:

4.1 - 11.78
4.2 - 11.02
4.3 - 9.88
4.4 - 8.97
4.5 - 8.61
4.6 - 9.34
4.7 - 10.29

I do think the overnights will be effected somewhat by the football, but it's hard to gauge the degree it will be an issue.

I seem to recall for the equivalent match in the last world cup ratings went from around 4 million to 11 million through the hour or so up to kick off. So it's hard to predict how many people who would otherwise watch DW will watch it and turn over or if some may opt to timeshift it to watch the build up.

I don't really no what some people want the BBc to do though...the only way to avoid a clash at all would be to start at 5.15pm and though they might have opted to start it at 6pm or 6.15pm, some people here have spent all series bitching about DW being on at this time, so it's a bit rich now for people to turn around and say it should be on earlier....

Bottom line: once timeshift comes in I'm sure things will be fine regardless.

I would start Doctor Who at 6:40pm. That would leave 5 minutes before Kick off.

Everyone's a winner!

I'd leave a 10 minute gap lol. Gives people time to get some snacks, go toilet.etc

I'll be watching Doctor Who, and since no one in the household is a footy fan (well they're not really DW fans either) I'll be watching it on BBC HD as it goes out, then flick to the match when it finishes

See... What did i say.

http://gallifreynewsbase.blogspot.co...-schedule.html

Changing the time (again !!!) just 2 days before the episode is due to be broadcast.... Seriously, Jay Hunt doesn't have a clue. To me it was the obvious thing to do. Starting at 6:45 was a bloody silly idea if you ask me.

Millions would have been switching over just before the episode ended.

How many times this series has the broadcast times changed this series?

No wonder the overnights are down.

erm thats next weeks episode....

which is also five minutes longer, btw, hence the five minute earlier start.

and i think it has been explained well in enough and often enough in this thread that the decline in overnights and increase in timeshift has been ongoing since 2005.
