Final ratings for Vincent and The Doctor should be available tomorrow, however they have been delayed to Tuesday the last couple of weeks, so say by Tuesday at the latest.

Speaking of which, Vincent and the Doctor cranked up 552, 420k views in it's first two days on iplayer and was still in th e top 10 as of yesterday....

Not bad at all, especially when it was up against both the footy AND the formula one qualifying. Think you migh see a really big timeshift on this one...

And I don't think it would have done better earlier either, because what you might have gained in share you would have lost in available audience in my view.

I'm hoping for overnights of 6 million next week, mind, not great opposition (Cameroon vs Denmark match coverage starts at 7pm, kick off 7.30pm, not a great draw I don't think!) and you would think the trailer for the episode will attract some of those that have been time-shifting to watch live...

Really pleased to see it doing so well. Speaking personally, there was no way I was missing Doctor Who for that shower of a football team.

Most people watch the show when it's shown so it's not getting huge ratings but then again, it seems not many people watch tv on Saturday, well, not in the summer. It's doing okay but it's not really a 'must see' show for most of the potential tv audience out there.

it happens for all tv shows. You have your overnight ratings and then a week later you get the final ratings, and it is the final ratings that are actually the official ones, not the overnights.

Also iplayer ratings aren't even included in the final ratings, unless via the virgin media catch up option, so god knows what your own about. The final ratings are the overnights tidyed up to match the exact time slot, with those that recorded it or watched it via a catch up service within 7 days of it's broadcast.

Timeshifts for Doctor Who this series have ranged from 1.3 - 2 million, way ahead of anything any other programme on tv can manage, so essentially your whole post is wrong and you show a lack of awareness of how tv viewing habits are changing year on year.

The people that are timeshift viewers are people that consider the show "must see" else they wouldn't go out of their way to make sure the watch it, they just do so at their convince, as will increasingly be the case with tv audiences in general. Certainly they consider it "must see" tv more than the significant chunk of the overnight audience who only watch Doctor Who because, after channel hopping, they watch it because there is nothing else they fancy on at that time. Doctor Who is leading the field in relation to time shift because of the audience demographic it attracts, but time shifts of a million are becoming quite common now for many drama shows. Thats why year on year overnight ratings get lower and lower across the board.

So judging by the last few weeks ratings this series will end up with the lowest average ratings since it came back and the lowest finale ratings since Series 1.

It's likely that Vincent will have the second highest rating for a 10th episode of a series once final ratings are in, and while it's likely last nights episode will be the lowest rated episode 12 of a series, considering it was up against the England world cup game it did very well.

But that doesn't entitle you to try and make things up about ratings that aren't true especially when you know full well it isn't true.

Surely any ratings comparisons is rather futile with fluctuations like this (that have presumably happened at other points)?

the differences are pretty small though, so no it doesn't make any comparison "futile" at all, especially on a forum that is about discussing ratings informally.. there are other complexity's in comparing rating of greater significance: for example time slots changing, weather patterns, competition on the other channels.

One has to take a range of factors in to account here, but the past figures do still provide a reasonable point of comparison as long as you acknowledge and are aware of relevant factors that may relate to various fluctuations.

So glad that the episode held up well against the opposition!

It says about 4%...but anyway before anyone thinks I'm saying it to slag off series five I'm not saying it just in relation to series five in particular (hence why I said at other points as well) I'm just trying to make a point about comparing statistics (which can be variable enough in themselves) over a period of time (it's the sociologist in me ), including for example series one to series four or even to series two. I guess what I'm trying to say is it don't really matter that much how the current series figures are in comparison to past series, all that really matters is it performs at a level that satisfies the BBC that they can justify making it, which it clearly is.

It's done by Barb. A few homes have a machine to register their viewing habits. It seems really old-fashioned and I doubt it's remotely accurate. They probably just make the final figure up.
