actually it would be interesting to see how timeshifting affects viewing - for example, I probably watch more of this series as I can watch it when I like, rather than missing it and thinking "oh well". On the other hand, some people may not watch a programme because they can catch up with it later, and then forget. It loses the "must watch" factor.
I would think that people are more selective on what they watch so some programmes (the "good" ones) will get higher ratings as people can choose to watch them, rather than just watching what is on when they are ready to watch tv (having dinner or when tired etc). My mum for example seems only to watch things she has recorded. Apart from eggheads.
