The BBC America rating for 'The Curse of the Black Spot' is...

“Doctor Who (BBC America, 9pm)
0.5 HH, Viewers: 0.760 million, 0.3 A18-49”

To be fair, most 'top ten shows' reduce it down to shows as opposed to episodes. So Eastenders would have a single spot rather than four etc.

We do have very lazy telly in this country, though. The likes of Eastenders and Corrie wouldn't last a month on one of the main US stations.

Doctor Who is a beacon of hope for UK TV!

Rubbish!

Whilst EE and CS would not, themselves, last a month on a 'main' US station, they have quite a lot of dross of their own that has been extremely long lived.

While that's awesome news, can anyone explain how - or correct me if I've got this wrong - 6.5m + 4.11m can equal 8.89m?

Does that mean a certain number of the recordings weren't watched in the right period to count?

The overnight figures consist of live viewers plus all timeshifters up until 2am the next morning. The figure we often talk about as the timeshift is the difference between the overnight and the consolidated 7 day figure.

4.75 million live

+ early timeshifters (approx. 1.77 million)

= overnight ratings of 6.52 million

+ the rest of the timeshifters

= 8.86 million.

Well, I never knew that, thank you sir.

Cue this very specific breakdown to be mis-used by the doom-sayers though...!

People often confuse the overnights with 'live' viewing, but they actually include something called VOSDAL - Viewing On Same Day As Live - which is 'in day' timeshifting, and the day in question runs until 2am.

That's why timeslot arguments that revolve around the overnights are on weak ground. The people using those overnight figures don't know how many are actually watching live, whether the series is shown at 6pm or 7pm, from the overnights.

How does that work then. I mean from the Gallifreybase thread with quarterly hour breakdowns for the episode it started with 6.0 million.

BBC One

18:00 ….. 6.0 (35.3%)
18:15 ….. 6.6 (37.1%)
18:30 ….. 7.0 (37.5%)

That 6.0 million at 18:00 is the combined figure for all the viewings, of what was shown on BBC One/HD between 18:00 and 18:15, that occured before 2am Sunday. Since Doctor Who was on for all or most of that 15 minute period, those viewers go towards the rough calculation of the overnight ratings for the show. Though it would generally be the five minutes breakdowns that would be used, and all the five minute periods covering the length of the episode.

The consolidated ratings will use the figures for BBC One/HD viewings for the precise time that Doctor Who was on (e.g. 18:01 to 18:43), whether live or timeshifted (during the 163 hours following broadcast).

So that figure for 18:00 - 18:15 doesn't refer to what was watched live in that 15 minutes, but rather to any on the day viewing of what was originally broadcast during that 15 minutes.

Does that help?

Greatly.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to go through it all in detail.

Still desperately trying to prove the series is failing, I see. You really ought to leave those goalposts where they are.

With just 2 episode to go in this half of the series it looks like an average of about 8million

The show still going as strong as ever!!!

the ratings have been fantastic this series!

I have really enjoyed it and it is deserved, i wonder how the ratings will differ due to a later timing this week!

Still going well after the 5.9m on TDW!

Was hoping it would reach 6m, but I can hardly complain... It's still pulling in people

Next Week will be a bit of a testament, given it being the second half of the story...

The Rebel Flesh scored an AI of '85'

That's the lowest this series.
