Oh would you look at that! I should say I am not actually making a point about viewing figures for series 5 and 6 I just think if we are going to use them they should at least be used with the comparable data. All we learn is they are pretty much the same shock horror.”
The 4% wasn't an across the board increase for each an every show, but rather an average across reported channels, with a lot of that coming from previous under-reporting of viewership for lower rating shows and channels, and reporting more channels (in part the increase comes from better reporting in multi-channel homes), so it can't simply be used to lower any one show's post January 2010 rating by a fixed amount. It's also reflective of a ratings drift, which means that, if we had the data (and we don't - because the old and new BARB panels only ran in parallel for about two years), we'd have to adjust all TV ratings, for individual shows and channels, by different amounts.
There's also the complicating factor of non-BARB recorded viewing through iPlayer, which has rapidly increased but which we still can't assess very easily to count unique viewers.
But yeah - the central point is, as you say, that they...

were to apply a blunt 4% reduction like that.
To date the opening series for each Doctor has performed about on a par, on average, for the first five episodes, and so have the subsequent series for Ten and Eleven. And that's despite the longevity of the show now, and the fact that the (inevitable) rapid increase in digital take-up over the past couple of years has led to increased competition for the show (and everything else on the big five channels).
Which is inconvenient for stcoop's 'failure' agenda. Thus my post.
