Excellent, thanks again for posting.

The doom and gloom merchants will be wringing their hands and lamenting over those lost 0.19 million viewers this year (who are probably still watching it on iPlayer anyway!)!

Fantastic final ratings this series!

Sad Iplayer doesnt count towards it as over a million every week smash the records! which will mean its probably the highest rated series of the show yet!

Either way 7 years and still sustained momentum!

Yes, not bad at all for a show that is perennially said to be doomed.

And with iPlayer factored into the figures, the average would be even better.

I noticed the Daily Mail making a fuss that Downton Abbey had a drop of 400,000 viewers by episode two - the fact it gets more than 9m viewers didn't seem important. I tend to ignore those stupid stories now.

One more interesting stat from the ratings thread over at Gallifrey Base.

Quote:
“The average for Tennant's first two series was 7.63m. The average for Smith's first two series is 7.62m.”

Absolutely. It's a pity the Live+7 figures aren't routinely published alongside or soon after. The total regular number of viewers is in the region of 9 or 10 million. The show is broadly as popular now as any other year.

Anyone got the uncounted iPlayer stats to add to the official figures for series 6 please?

I guess my only concern is that family dramas, like Doctor Who and Merlin, get good viewing figures in the end - but not necessarily on the night of broadcast.

One function of a show like Doctor Who is to act as an early evening 'hook' for viewers for the whole Saturday night line up on BBC1.

If the BBC thinks it can hook as many viewers on the night with a cheap game show (in the style of Celebrity Family Fortunes) then will it continue to invest in Who, Merlin etc?

Or, at least, will it continue to maintain the show's profile by giving it such a good slot in the schedule?

Can I at this point just mention:

Don't Scare the Hare

and

Epic Win.

At the moment, the BBC don't seem to have the knack of producing cheap game shows that hook the viewers ........

Also don’t forget that the BBC makes a huge amount of money from overseas sales and merchandising from Doctor Who.

Which they would not get from a game show.

Yes, that's very true. My comment wasn't about the BBC cancelling the show, but just about it (possibly) moving it to a less high-profile slot if the overnight figures don't justify its key position in the Saturday night schedule.

And it was two hours long - which is a bloody big commitment for 9pm on Christmas night. I don't care how funny Maggie Smith is.

Plus, and there's no nice way to say this, ITV's on-line catchup service is still bleedin' awful and not present on the range of devices iPlayer is so I suspect more people PVR it. Great result for Downtown though, nice to see original drama doing so well this year (although ITV can't be happy about a third or more of their audience timeshifting and likely skipping advertising).

Of course the popularity of the iPlayer is another problem for Who when it comes to the final figure. I'm seeing around 700,000 iPlayer views being reported which would put it in the mid 11's, the new ratings system is going to make for very interesting reading when it rolls out.

Regardless, 10.7 is still a hell of a good performance for Who, kinda makes all the doom merchants around here look a tad silly IMO. And let's put it in context, it was a Christmas special for a show that's now in its seventh year and where the last episode in the regular series was broadcast less than three months earlier (not six months as we're used to). Remarkable figures really and you have to say the show is looking incredibly strong right now.

Quick question for those that no better, reading the Den of Geek post on the final figures they say that timeshift would include the viewers for the repeat on the 27th. Is that right, always thought it was just the original broadcast + HD + timeshift?
gslam2
03-01-2012
It shouldn't do - BBC have their own internal figures that can calculate the extra people that watch on repeat but the standard viewing figures don't include repeats.

Final ratings aren't yet available for the 27th either.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I thought. So total reach for the christmas special looks to be.. uh hang on... carry the one.. around 12 - 13 million? Assuming the repeat doesn't get a massive timeshift which seems unlikely and that Den Of Geek's figure of 1.1m is about right.

And the Live+7 figure is out at (drumroll please)... 12.88m! So it added another 2.1 million over and above the initial broadcast plus timeshift. Shame we don't have Live+7 ratings for all shows but BBC's highest rated show for the day and surely very close to beating out Downtown too (can't believe DA gets much boost from ITV player). Of course all this means but one thing for Doctor Who...

OMG IT'S DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!!!!
