Having quickly looked through the series AIs, only those two eps scored higher than 89, matching Doomsday, The Silence two-parter and The Big Bang, so 89 is fantastic but even so, yeah I would have scored it 90+

Thing is you are in this little bubble at the moment where every episode is brilliant/fantastic/best ever/OMG etc etc, but the general viewing public tends to be a bit more impartial when viewing an episode.

That is why the AI is a very good indicator IMO of the wider appeal of episodes, rather than looking at the narrowness of critical responses and the obsessiveness of many fan responses.

Opening episode rating from Canada...

Quote:
“He did it again! The Season 7 premiere of DOCTOR WHO drew an earth-shattering 620,000 viewers, making it the second-highest rated episode in series history on SPACE and the most-watched program on Canadian television in its timeslot Saturday night. Featuring zombies, break-ups, make-ups, and more Daleks than you can shake a sonic screwdriver at, Asylum of the Daleks made SPACE the #1 network – conventional or specialty – Saturday night at 9 p.m. ET with total viewers and in the key demos A25-54 and A18-49. Peaking with 746,000 viewers, in all 1.1 million Canadians watched some or all of the episode.

The Season 7 premiere of DOCTOR WHO exterminated minds with an unexpected appearance by Jenna-Louise Coleman as Oswin Oswald, who is set to star as the Time Lord’s next companion later this season. Viewers can relive the time-travelling trickery online at SPACEcast.com.”

Doctor Who breaks BBC America ratings record..

From Nick at TV by the Numbers.

Quote:
“BBC America ratings for both Doctor Who and Copper were pretty fantastic. Doctor Who was its best telecast of all time while Copper was amazingly up from last week in viewers.

Doctor Who 9 PM: 1.555 million viewers.”

Plus a comment from somebody who knows about US ratings...

Holy crap! 0.6 in the demo for Doctor Who, that’s huge for a small channel like BBC America. I didn’t see that coming. That matches NBC’s demo rating and beats Fox’s college football. (Admittedly those are unpopular teams from what I’ve heard, but still…. ”

I do think its good that its so well received over there. Pity the main networks don't show it.

The rating for Asylum of the Daleks has broken the 8m barrier.

“Ratings for Doctor Who Asylum Of The Daleks are now up to 8.015m. The final rating will be available on Monday.”

It's doing very well then. In the UK, US and Canada. Lovely stuff. I hope the BBC routinely publish the Live+7 figures when they become available.

Last year when they released figures that included people who watched it on iPlayer instead of live Broadcast or home recording, the total figures were massive.

So timeshift of at least 1.6 million and probably a bit higher, nothing wrong there at all. As it's still in the top ten iPlayer 'most popular' episodes (6 at time of writing) I wouldn't be surprised to see it finish very close to, if not above, 10 million on Live+7 figures which is (IMO of course) fantastic.

To put that into context Rose had 10.81, New Earth 8.6, Smith & Jones 8.7, Partners in Crime 9.1, Eleventh Hour 10.08, Impossible Astronaut 8.86. Looks like Asylum will be right in line with the rest of the 'no new Doctor' series openers on final figures and probably about the same, if not a bit higher, on iPlayer than last year (IA got 1.93 million total views in 2011). Personally I'm of the opinion those iPlayer figures should be counted as final (i.e. we need to shift to Live+7 to get a fair and accurate comparison across all New Who series which would suggest that Who is actually pulling higher ratings now than it did for the RTD era. Remarkable considering overall viewing figures for TV are trending downwards...

Note - that's not a criticism of RTD or praise for Moffat or any other blasted thing people use to start flame wars. Just trying to form an honest opinion on the state of the show with the greater public these days and it's a convenient shorthand.

The good thing about Live+7 is that they have done research to know how many of the views are fans rewatching after watching the broadcast, multiple iplayer rewatches etc and how many are new views. Rather than just crudely adding the total of view requests. So Live+7 really is a pretty good estimate of how many people have watched across the nation. (as opposed to how many people rewatch endlessly).

Damn and here was me thinking all my rewatches were boosting the ratings

I think we also need to take into account how much more accessible iplayer is now than it was back in 2005.

The huge increase in platforms where it can now be viewed such as smartphones, tablets, smart tv's, games consoles etc etc mean comparison over the last 7 years is simply not viable.

5.5 I'm surprised it wasn't a higher figure. It seemed to encompass a family audience. Perhaps the x factor took the edge of its ratings in the clash

When Doctor Who finished 2m viewers switched over to other channels.

From my rough calculations Doctor Who took about 700,000 viewers from the X-Factor.

'Asylum of the daleks' has consolidated ratings of 8.33m which gained 34.4 percentage of the total audience and it time shifted 1.95m. This is only a 530k difference from last years first episode.

Not bad ratings for episode 2 - everyone took a dip on Saturday (X-Factor had a big drop).

I think the % share is a bit of a worry, but I think people are always happier to watch Who on catch-up and something like X-Factor live.

“It's terrible now, I don't watch, and none of my friends do, Moffat Out......”

COMPLETE RUBBISH.

That rating proves that after Eccleston/Tennant/RTD & seven series the British public still love Doctor Who.

On to the next 50 years!!!

glad DInosaurs scored well with the AI too....it is brilliant....its the kinda episode that can really cheer you up i feel also...may need that as a mid-work-weeker episode .

But glad the AI has done well and the viewers will of course increase .

Very very consistent which is great, however i do wish iplayer would count towards it apparently it got 2million+ viewers last week :O

No doubt someone will claim Who failing to get into the Top 5 is a disaster.

Just goes to prove that Doctor Who is the program for the new generation of TV viewer (DVR I-Player)

Ironic that a show first shown in 1963 is showing the way forward!

Totally well i always end to love music, shows, anything that has a forward thinking way of nature, it has a timeless appeal

And totally and to be honest i cannot name a show that has been on for 7 series/seasons back to back and achieved such strong and sustained ratings year-on-year in comparison with each other, it is fantastic.

Not that ratings impact on quality...same as commercial sales etc but it does showcase that Doctor Who will still be around for its 100th Anniversary OOH YEAH!!!

I know it means very little to you lovely people, but here in the wilds of Canada, it is growing in popularity.
