Series 4 first 12 episode average: 7.83
Series 4 all 13 episode average: 8.04

Journey's End brought in a 10.57 so almost three million higher than the average viewing figures up to that point.

I know I keep mentioning this but it's worth bearing in mind that S7 also has a lot of views via iPlayer that (AFAIK) aren't counted in timeshift figures so the actual average figure is almost certain to be above S4 even with Journey's End included. Such a fantastic feeling to see this show doing so well in its seventh series and pretty much sticking two fingers up at the normal 'rules' for long running shows.

I think the % audience share is a strong indicator too. Very pleased, also, with Who's later scheduling. RTD always argued that going our after 7pm gave the show more gravitas.

I agree Journey's end did increase the average ratings of series 4, but it also had the first two episodes in the 9 million range. But episodes between 3 and 6, and 8 really brought the average down. However, for series 7, it very much seems that we will have near or above 8 million even with three episodes, and I am sure the remaining two will be so as well. Another benefit to series 7 will be is that episode 6 will be a christmas day episode, and if that is included in the official series average rather than a separate special like the past ones, it will increase the average no doubt.

I agree about the Iplayer too...but it can't be used to compare it with past series' as they didn't have the benefit of that. But it goes to prove that despite not all overnights not being as high as the first couple of series'....people have other means to watch and not a sign of some downhill in ratings....overnights mean absolutley nothing at all....

Approaching 11 million for Asylum, post-finals, I hear.

these are some impressive stats...am very surprised at the AI for Mercy however with 85....still at least it is bang on 85 but i am very surprised.

But overall it is being a beyond consistent year for ratings and reception and stats...plus the stories are so darn fantastic .

And agreed the ratings onwards are gonna continue being strong for the remaining two eps....the Xmas special and into series 7.2 we will see how it fares too...new era, new companion etc...hmmm.

I've had a quick google for this term, and I couldn't find any info on it. I'm familiar with the idea of overnights and then the timeshifted figure - what are the post-finals and how are they calculated? At the moment though, eleven million sounds mighty impressive!

In short, a lot of people have watched episode one.

A Town Called Mercy had high ratings partly on the back of following Strictly come Dancing's 9million.

Yes - a good night for the BBC. Hopefully some of the people who watched because of that enjoyed it and will watch again.

A Town Called Mercy is nearly up to 8m after 2 days...


So maybe a final rating around 8.1m/8.2m.

Thankyou! I find it quite odd that these huge ratings on I player are now not somehow included along with the final figures. How can barb can now say that only 8 million watch doctor who when that's simply not the case given how many viewed the programme on a different platform on I player. However I guess if the bbc executives are reading these figures and the results from america every week that's actually all that matters.

Are those figures considered good bad or indifferent?

On the face of it, compared to the UK that's small especially when you consider the huge population difference. How does that compare to other BBC America fayre?

They have started using an additional figure called "Live+7". I don't know if they are routinely publishing these for all shows yet. The BBC are very aware of how many unique views the show is getting across all platforms, even if they aren't yet publishing that figure as a matter of routine.

They published the number for, I think, Let's Kill Hitler or something last year, as part of a press release publicising the Live+7 system.

It seeks to add together the number of live-on-the-night, watch-recording-on-the-night, watch-recording-in-next-7-days, watch-repeat-within-7-days, watch-iplayer-within-7-days. They statistically adjust for things such as people doing repeat rewatching via iPlayer.

So, whilst the "final" ratings might not include iPlayer, hopefully in future we will get to see all the Live+7 figures to know .

And then, of course, there is the long tail of people who watch on iPlayer but for some reason wait until well after seven days after intiial broadcast. But I guess the bulk of first time views is in the first week. 'spose.

Perhaps the use of "final rating" is becoming increasingly innacurate. They should have called it "final rating until new technology comes along to muddy the water".

Not when CBS is housing some of the most watched show in the US, one would expect Averaging over 19 million per series.
