Doctor who final audience share for 'mercy' is 33.4 per cent. The overnights however are not that different to spring 2011. In april 2011, the overnights began with 6.5 million for an easter episode. Then 5.4m for ep 2. Then 6.2m for ep 3 and 5.9m for ep 4. So the overnights are not all that different during those months as compared to this autumn scheduling in 2012. Series 4 of doctor who with tennant 'n' tate travelling in the tardis timeshifted on average 0.85 million viewers. But by series 6 we can see that the figure had moved up to 1.79 million viewers on average choosing to timeshift their favourite show and watch it at their leisure. This resulted in bringing series six's overnight audience up in line with the other previous five series of doctor who that had gone out before, despite the spin of conflicting and confusing media reports that the series was now beginning to loose viewers with matt smith at the helm. I player requests during series 4 were on average only 0.51 million however series six figures show that it actually had the biggest requests to date with a massive 1.32 million figure across the whole of series six. Series seven is so far timeshifting on average for the first three episodes 1.95 million and its average barb rating has so far been 8.11m with only two more episodes to add to that already impressive average figure. It currently stands slightly higher than the most popular series number four figure of 8.05 million over the whole series, this being the year that 'journeys end' was the most watched uk show in 2008. People now watch the programme in a number of ways it seems its as popular as ever.

i am so happy with the stats for series 7! I mean it should never be the "be all and end all" but Doctor Who is on such a new golden era peak and i love it

So it seems like more people *should* be watching it because of the darker evenings, but perhaps they're all watching it on timeshift when it's even darker?!

Excellent ratings.

Thought I should chip in here seeing as I have access to this sort of info...

Power of Three has a consolidated figure of 7.218m so far, with today and tomorrow to still add to that number. (this is of course not including the iPlayer or BBC3 figures)

In the US, Power of Three had 1.00 million viewers, and the average for the first four episodes of S7 is 1.16 million -- an increase of 24% over the average for the first four episodes of S6!

Ratings are absolutely fine. Anyone who says otherwise just wants it to fail and are ignoring hard facts.

'The Angels Take Manhattan' had an average audience of 5.9 million on saturday 29th september at 7.20pm. It was the fifth episode of seventh series. Doctor who will take a short break, and this was finale episode for amy and rory who dramatically departed as the doctor's long time companions. The audience peaked at 6.3 million. The x factor was the highest rated programme of saturday evening pulling in an average audience of 8.7 million viewers. Final ratings for doctor who will be released in a weeks time but the programme has seen a rise in timeshifting viewing so far the average episode has been watched later by around 1.95 million.

It'll safely peak at way over 8m then. Not only from new viewers who are timeshifting, but there'll be an enormous amount of repeat viewers on iPlayer as well, which show up just the same.

I predict it'll be around 8.8m consolidated. It may even break 9!

Oh i hope the viewers go to reach that total!

Will be brilliant

What a sublime episode!

I'm going to predict the final two figures (Power of Three will be fairly accurate hopefully) to try and suggest an early overall Series 7.1 average.

1. Asylum of the Daleks: 8.33m CONFIRMED

2. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship: 7.57m CONFIRMED

3. A Town Called Mercy 8.42m CONFIRMED

4. The Power of Three 7.70m PREDICTED

5. The Angels Take Manhattan 8.80m PREDICTED

PREDICTED SERIES 7.1 AVERAGE: 8.16m

If I'm correct, and I'm confident I'm at least very close, we have a truly fantastic 2012 average. Congratulations Doctor Who, you deserve it!

I didn't think iplayer views were included, just timeshifted????

I'm pretty sure iPlayer is the main source of timeshifting, but I'm not 100% on that. Doctor Who fans have a tendency to repeat watch a lot more than fans of other shows, which is one of the reasons Doctor Who timeshifts so highly.

Remember that if you watch on demand on your TV, that still goes through iPlayer, and those types of views are definitely counted, so I presume all iPlayer views are.

I believe iPlayer isn't counted by BARB but the BBC do count it and add it to the Total reach later on.

I would expect The Angels take Manhattan to get about 8 million in the final figures going on previous timeshifts. Anymore than that would be a surprise BUT it has happened before!

Any viewing that is live or via:

PVR
VCR
DVDR
VoD - including iPlayer etc.
is recorded by BARB if, and only if, it is viewed via a TV set with a BARB box attached.

VoD, including iPlayer, that is watched over the Interwebs (on a mobile, laptop, tablet etc.) is not currently counted - though a trial is under way and this is due to change in the near(ish) future.

The BBC do add up all forms of viewing, including all forms of iPlayer, and work out a Live+7 reach figure, which occasionally they share with us.

Thanks for another helpful post, Dr Thete. Do you know whether the Live+7 information is likely to be published less sporadically in future?

The BBC have been saying that for Doctor Who, and other shows, overnights are of diminishing importance. So presumably they'd want Live+7 figures out to support that?

Excellent ratings, if only it could be a little more consistent. If TATM timeshifts the same as TPOT the average should just scrape 8m.

No idea. With BARB making plans to include web based VoD in the ratings, and to produce 28 day ratings (on top of the 7 day ones we have now) maybe the BBC are trying to avoid confusing the issue.
