To switch off or not
I have a Toshiba 42z3030 lcd tv.
Putting green issues to one side. Is it better for the tv to switch it off at the mains every night? also my Panasonic SCPT 850 home cinema system. I believe my Sky HD box is meant to be kept in standby when not in use. Any views? |

Your choice really, the TV should only take a VERY small amount of power when turned to standby, and less when switched OFF (although most Plasma/LCD sets don't actually switch off 100%).

Thanks Nigel.
I take it leaving the equipment in standby doesn't affect the life of it. |

Thanks Nigel.
I take it leaving the equipment in standby doesn't affect the life of it. I remember years back, B&W valve TV days, an old lady bought a TV and never turned it off - when she wasn't using it she just turned the volume and brightness right down! ![]() Despite the normal poor reliability of valve TV's, her's never broke down - we were eventually called out because the tube was worn out!. Most failures occur when turning ON or turning OFF, failure while running is less common. |
