Why do they all sing "meh" instead of "mee" ?

I thought that every girl who had to sing the word "me" - and there were quite a few - almost without exception sang it like "meh" rather than "mee" and it really annoyed me and spoilt it (especially when it was the last word of the song).

Did anyone else notice this ?

No - but I'll watch for it next time.

One of them - can't remember who - put an 'h' in front of I everytime she sang it - truly awful.

exactly what I was thinking!

Yes, I agree. I thought it was just me that had noticed it! If a lip reader was watching they wouldn't be able to understand some of the words as the shape some of the girls make with their mouths isn't what they are saying - if you see what I mean!

Someone, maybe you, posted this last week and I listened for it this week and it was everywhere. It really irritated meh toouh!

I think they are all picking up bad habits from each other, especially over-acting and rather grotesque gurning and exaggerated body movements. This may be diminished on stage but in close up on our huge flat screen it takes some viewing.

Had another rant about it tonight when Cleo sang "as long as he needs meh!"

Thats what all the Cockerneys will talk like innit?!

We commented last night on the meh- and also on Niamh's lack of diction- I couldn't believe no-one on the panel picked up on it.

and Cockerneys will also shout EVERYTHING rather than actually singing when you need a high note or any kind of volume

having said that, I'm going to mention my pet hate on these shows (felt the same over some of ADWD last year): bad choices of songs

I think its because the throat opens more if you're singing a "meh" sound whereas a "mee" sound closes the throat up making it difficult to hit the high notes (if you know what i mean )

Try it lol

Interesting observation and I can see what you mean, well perhaps it is something to do with the vocal coach then because as far as I could make out, they ALL did it (of course just the ones that had to sing "me" !)

It's because they all secretly want to be Britney PB (pre-breakdown).

It's the jellied eels that makes 'em talk like that.

Which is odd, because I'm just trying to remember when Claire Moore (the vocal coach) sang Her or Me (the predecessor to Now That I've Seen Her) on the original cast recording of Miss Saigon, and I'm fairly sure she doesn't sing "Her or meh!" through it, but I might have to dig it out to have another listen...

I'm a cockney and I don't say "meh", I say "mee", perhaps even "may".

So am I, and I've just sat here saying it all 3 ways

And I agree, I say "may" rather than "meh" too

I occasionally say "meh" but only when I am being sheepish.

talking about keith, he's currently playing the narrator in joseph on tour and the review still picks up his over pronounciation of every syllable which was rather annoying after a while

lol, your comment made me dig out my copy of the Miss Saigon OLC just to check... and she certainly doesn't say "Her or meh"!

And I didn't know the vocal coach was Claire Moore! (shows how much I've been paying attention) Maybe they're all saying "meh" because they think it makes their voice sound richer/fuller/better etc? In any case, it's really annoying me too.

Ooh i didn't know thats who the vocal coach is. Love that song from Miss Saigon, in fact i love Miss Saigon full stop.

It was just a theory as to why they sing meh. Could still be true and maybe Claire doesn't sing it that way because she has a far superior voice that can handle those high notes with ease

Here's a pretty definitive way of how we as Londoners say me.

It's the Eastenders Nancy we were speaking about on Saturday!
