I have a sony bravia tv, a video recorder, a sony pvr and a sky box.
does anyone one know how to connect them all so i can tape sky on the video whilst taping freeview on the pvr. At the minute i can view sky on the tv okay and record it on the pvr. The video used to have sky on channel L2 but now since connecting the pvr, that channel has become the pvr channel. I cant seem to get sky in its own right on the video. I can only get it through the pvr. As far as I know the pvr is connected to the tv via a hdmi lead. The sky is connected to the tv via a scart and to the pvr via a scart and my video is connected to the pvr via a scart. there is only one scart from the sky decoder so cant link the video direct to the sky box. Any ideas.

Why is Sky connected to your Sony PVR? A PVR can only record from its internal digital tuner, not from an external source (such as Sky)? Or is the PVR really a DVDR with its own hard drive - in which case it can record from an external scart input?

There are two scart sockets on your Sky box. Connect one to the TV, and the other to the thing that you want to be able to use to record Sky. If the recording thing is your video recorder, connect the Sky VCR scart to your video recorder scart in with a scart lead. If the recording thing is a DVD recorder, connect the Sky VCR scart to your DVD recorder scart in with a scart lead.

You need to decide exactly what you would want to record to what? Would you ever want to record Freeview channels from the PVR (DVDR?) to video, as well as Sky? If so, you need at least two separate scart inputs on your VCR (unless you want to keep disconnecting one scart lead and reconnecting another).

Assuming you really do have a PVR, not a DVD recorder with its own hard drive, and therefore assuming that there is absolutely no need to connect your PVR and your Sky box together, and also assuming that you might want to record from both your Sky box and your PVR to tape:

Run a scart lead from the PVR TV scart to the TV (AV2).
Run a scart lead from the Sky TV scart to the TV (AV1).
Run a scart lead from the Sky VCR scart to the VCR in/out (probably AV1).
Run a scart lead from the PVR VCR scart to the VCR in (probably AV2).

If you want to watch Freeview (or a recording on the PVR) on the TV, select AV2 on the TV.
If you want to watch Sky on the TV, select AV1 on the TV.
If you want to record Sky on the VCR, select AV1 as the source input on the VCR.
If you want to record Freeview/PVR material on the VCR, select AV2 as the source input on the VCR.
If you want to watch a video, press play on the VCR and select AV1 on the TV. The video will send its signal out to the Sky box via scart, which will then send the same signal (rather than the Sky channel it is tuned to) to the TV via scart.

In which case you need to decide will you ever record Sky to DVD, or will you ever record Sky to tape, or will you ever record Freeview to tape, because you don't have enough scart sockets on all three pieces of equipment to allow all three to be connected to each other, and still allow at least two of them to be connected to your television.

In all honesty, if you've got a DVD recorder, why are you considering recording anything to tape (except maybe Sky in exceptional circumstances if you are busy recording Freeview stuff to disc)? Does your DVDR not allow you to record Sky to DVD while recording Freeview to hard drive? If so, your VCR can effectively become just a playback mechanism, therefore nothing needs connecting to the VCR except maybe the telly via scart.

There are other alternatives (some DVDRs support s-video in, support component out, Sky has an s-video out; also, your VCR will record from an analogue RF input, and your Sky box sends its signal out through an analogue RF output though not in stereo) but the first thing you need to decide is what pieces of kit don't actually need connecting to other pieces of kit. If you can't ever imagine yourself recording Freeview to tape (as you have a hard drive and a DVD recorder) then your DVDR does not need connecting to your VCR. Or if you can't ever imagine recording Sky directly to tape (rather than Sky to hard drive, then eventually to tape) then the Sky box doesn't need connecting to your VCR.
