Hi I have recently purchased a Samsung home cinema system. Which is set up as follows:

Sky+ to Tv (scart lead)
DVD to Tv (scart lead)
Sky+ to DVD (aerial)

I have now bought a optical lead as I heard it will allow surround sound through tv progammes not just dvds. I have connected it from the DVD to Sky+ is this correct? I don't seem to be getting any sound out of the speakers when watching tv.

Does the DVD player have to be on?

Please help!

Thanks

The DVD (Samsung homecinema system?) has to be able to take the optical input as well as being on (as it needs to drive the speakers!). I suspect the optical connector is an output, but if it an input too, then you need to get the DVD to switch over to that input for sound...

A make and model of the DVD Home Cinema system would be helpful for us to find out if it can take inputs... What you could do also (if it is not an optical input) is to route the Sky+ via the DVD. Connect Sky SCART to the DVD SCART input if it has one...

As son_t says - have you ensured that your DVD player/Samsung home cinema system has the ability to accept an auxiliary input via an optical connection - and if so, have you selected that auxiliary input on the Samsing?

A lot of these fancy home cinema systems are really just a DVD player with its own speakers - and don't offer anything in terms of connectivity to allow other pieces of equipment to send their audio output to it. Before spending any more money on leads and cables, check whether this Samsung thing actually allows you to do what you want to do. And if it doesn't, seriously consider ditching it and replacing it with a proper DVD player and a proper surround sound amp and speakers.

if its the system I'm thinking of you need to turn it on and select AUX on the remote, you should then get the sound from the sky box.

I've just had a look on play.com at a
samsung HT-TX35R/XEU 800 WATT 5.1 surround sound system I want to order at £230 and it states in the description "Audio in AUX1 AUX 2" !

Describes itself as a desirable home AV experience

Does this mean I will be able to watch Sky and PS3 through the TV. I dont want to spend £230 if its just a dvd player.

Ordering today so if anyone can help it would be apprecaited. Cheers

Specs look a bit sparse, no mention of any optical inputs, only audio line in and optical output.

I would have to say without any optical inputs it would be unwise to buy, especially if you are wanting to hook up Sky+ and PS3 console for DD5.1/DTS surround sound.

Edit: Just looked at the online user manual, it does state one optical input - the system would suffice, you would either have to swap cables over or purchase an optical switchbox though.

You would connect the Samsung to the TV as you would Sky/PS3, the audio side (optical) of Sky/PS3 to the Samsung sound system, this is providing your TV has the applicable connections - 2x HDMI/RGB scart.

Personally I would find a system that covers my needs now and for any additional equipment I may be connecting in the future.
