Composters

Who here composts? Have you composted for long? I've been filling our bin for about a year now, and have just started using it. Its soooo black and smells lush. They call it black gold dont they? Its so different to the multi-compost you buy at the garden centre.

I compost. We've been doing it for about a year as well and it is lovely. Smells nice too.

Doing it around a year here too - mine is now on the garden (well some of it is) - in fact I'm off out later to grab some more to top off these newspaper starter pots I'm usuing for melons and sweetcorn.

At the moment I just have an old black dustbin that I scavenged from the park (the bottom had worn off) turned upside down with a plank and a stone holding it down, but I hope to build something better this year as it's too small. What do you guys use?

Did you know you should put eggshells and wood in it? I had no idea!

Mine i built out of wood from b&q. Thought it might decompose itself as i didn't treat it but its been fine. Same size it was last year It is slowly falling apart a bit though, may need to repair it a bit

Do you mean in the base lil-r-rh? I think thats to help the drainage at the bottom. Makes sure air get in as thats needed for the process to work.

For all through - I've always put cut up branches in the bottom, like you say for ventilation, but the composting site I was reading reckons you want a 50/50 mix of green and brown waste, (brown being shredded wood and eggshells (which I'd never heard of putting in) and green being the rest) which was news to me - but then I don't know much about gardening, just a learner here!

Ah right yes. I read about the green/brown mix. If you just use greens you end up with just a sludge. I'd read about that from here. I tried to get a bin reduced from there through my council, but they took too long. They have good advice though about what to put in it. Pretty much anything organic apart from cat/dog poo.

I was lucky, our council delivered us a bloody huge compost bin, along with a little one for the kitchen including the plastic bags (which are compostable) to go with the little bin, all for the princely sum of £7.50.

The trick is to get someone to wee in it from time to time.
