Help needed to cable PC to TV
PhilAJ

I hope someone can help me.

I'm just involved in buying a 50" plasma TV for my golf club (an LG50) - to go in the lounge. I want to also use it to display competition scores from a PC which is upstairs. I realise I need a 12 - 15metre cable to go from the PC (or a switchbox) to the TV...the question is - is it just a long video cable ?

I read somewhere that the PC may have to be adjusted every time it is switched to the TV - for the resolution to be right - unless a 'clever' cable is used !!

ANy advice gratefully received.

Yep, that sort of cable would be ideal. However, if the TV has an HDMI/DVI input (it should) and the computer has a DVI output on the graphics card (again, chances are it should) you'd be better off getting a DVI to HDMI cable as the picture quality should be better. I found when connecting my PC to TV via a VGA cable, you can get areas on the screen which are out of focus due to phase and clock timings - and can be complicated to set up properly. With a DVI cable, you shouldn't have this issue.

I connect my laptop to a 40" LCD using VGA and have had no such problems?

Mind you, My cable is only 1m .... not 15m. The longer the cable, the more likey you are to hit problems. Dunno what VGA is like over along run ....

As it's analogue, you may pick up unwanted inteference if it runs next to other cables or isn't well shielded at that length. My HDTV is getting on for 3 years old so maybe with the newer ones you don't have that problem with VGA.

You will need a HDMI to DVI-D cable for HD ready tv in the manual for my new LCD HD tv is doesn't accept VGA cables so read the manual first and see what cable you need most probable a HDMI-DVI-D cable.

Yeah .... thats a possibility. Mine is a 3000 series Sony (so a current model).

You're right on the cable length though. As it's analogue, it'd need to be good quality in order to retain the signal cleanly.

Dunno if the OP was wanting to carry sound as well. VGA is picture only remember ....
