One of the free London papers has announced that Danny Dyer has been approached to play Bill Sikes! He was slagging off all the potential Nancys and said he was dreading the singing - but he'd only have to sing one song.

His solo is My Name, yes. He also sings in the reprise of It's A Fine Life.

It's also reported that it's going to be Nick Knowles. I wonder if they've got a couple lined up depending who is Nancy.

but Nick Knowles doesn't have any acting experience does he? And his only singing experience I'm aware of is his appearance on Celebrity Fame Academy!

He wouldn't be a bad choice, actually, at least for one of the younger Nancys.

Can someone explain to me who Danny Dyer is? I'm from the US. I don't think he is very big over here. Can he sing and do musical theater?

Well, I'm from the UK and I have no idea who he is either!

Although I'd love it to be Danny, I can't really see it being a long term thing. He's just done a short run of a Harold PInter play, only a few months and he hated it - the routine of it, having to do the same thing 8 times a week.
There again he has 2 daughters so they'd love it I suppose

I better get my tickets soon hehe

He's an English actor who mostly does the same role, Cockney wide boys, football hooligans and that sort of thing. He's done theatre but I think only straight plays, no musicals as far as I can tell

Danny Dyer looks quite young for the role (I know he looks younger than he is!) which suggests to me that they are expecting one of the younger girls to win. If the rumour is true.

Nick Knowles???!!!! He's a presenter who can neither act nor sing. Don't think so. Where did you hear that, Helbrown???

Wait a sec, they want to give the part of Bill Sikes to a guy whose never done musical theater before?

Does the character of Sikes not sing in there?

Given that all of the contestants have some form of training, why would they hire a guy who have no background in it to be in the show?

please please let this not be true. Can you picture the oh so young looking Danny Dyer bossing around Rowan Atkinson's Fagin? Its just wrong

and now the facts - as reported in another thread

he HAS NOT been offerd the role merely in discussion according to his agent and casting director lee dennison who is also involved somehow.

Who the hell is Dan Dyer? What has he been in? Perhaps I wil recognise his face if not his name.

Sykes doesn't need to be an amazing singer although if he is the song has more impact. It's more about the menacing acting.

Nick Knowles is too old for the majority of the Nancys. The playing age is around 35 according to the script but as Nancy is described as 23 or 24, if you're going for a 17 year old Sykes should come down in age as well.

if it's true I think Danny Dyer would be more menacing than Nick Knowles!

how do you know for a fact it's not true? You say yourself his agent says it's in discussion.
The Nick Knowles story is probably untrue as well.

'Nick Knowles will reportedly play Bill Sykes in the latest West End production of Oliver!'

Note the use of the word reportedly.
