Should'nt - Man Wanted from Copa - It would break my heart

It does seem that none of them should sing disco type songs, they all seem to sing the ballad/theatrical songs better.

Unfortunately - arn't most popular musicals now, a collection of pop songs put to a story? (Hen Nights Out)

I'd like to see Niamh sing something that will require her to belt and show how much power her voice has. So far she's had some quite soft songs. I'd also like to see someone sing "Unexpected Song" or "Being Alive".

All of the girls should be singing songs from traditional musical theatre. Last night was meant to have a musical theme running through it but for the majority of the girls the songs were picked from shows that have been put together based around the works of a particular pop/rock act, rather than shows that have an original musical score. Even Jessie's song from Dreamgirls, whilst being from an original musical, is from a musical about a pop band so is again in that style.

Tellingly the stand-out performances for me were Sarah and Jodie, who were given strong musical theatre songs that would obviously suit their voices better than shrieking out Sugababes hits. Samantha's pathetic rendition of 'Somewhere' showed all her inadequacies for me and the others all had pop-based songs yet again.

The big problem with this programme is that all of the girls - I would hope - are musical theatre singers. A lot of singers who are trained in this style find singing pop very difficult so we are not seeing the best of them. It also gives a totally unfair advantage to those girls who do get the show tunes as they are performing totally within their comfort zones.

The emphasis on pop songs was a major factor in my not auditioning. I can sing musical theatre in my sleep (which probably would not make me a great Nancy!) but sound horrible doing pop.

We need to see the girls doing songs that we can directly relate to the role of Nancy so why not have a week where they sing the massive torch songs from musicals. 'Oom Pah Pah' and 'Fine Life' have their own demands but Nancy's performance lives or dies on the strength of her acting and her rendition of 'As Long as He Needs Me'.

So, songs like:

Being Alive - Company
Time Heals Everything - Mack and Mabel
Unexpected Song - Song & Dance/Tell Me On a Sunday (would be quite amusing as the DVO version is pathetic)
Defying Gravity/Wizard and I - Wicked
As If We Never Said Goodbye/With One Look - Sunset Boulevard
Cabaret - Cabaret
Don't Cry for Me Argentina - Evita
All That Jazz - Chicago
I Dreamed a Dream - Les Mis

That's just off the top of my head. All in the right range for Nancy as well. The majority of those songs are fairly accessible to the public in general so I can't see people switching off in their millions just because the Beeb has spent a week not dumbing down to current pop hits.

I like Jodie but I think her singing Don't Rain On My Parade would be a big mistake if her auditon video is anything to go by. Its just one long (not very good) Striesand impression and a bit cabaret. Shes better than that.

I couldn't agree more with you there. How can people be expected to compare someone singing 'Time of My life', which is a cheesy pop song, to someone singing 'Send in the Clowns'? Surely it would be fairer if each week they all sang simililar songs.
Not many pop songs are all that demanding to sing, and as you say it hardly allows the girls chance to show off their voices much.
One song I'd add to your list is Nobody's Side from Chess. For some reason I'd love to see Jessie attempt that one, see what she can do with it.

“Defying Gravity/Wizard and I - Wicked”

I'm not sure Defying Gravity would be a good choice. It needs a strong belter and I'm not convinced any of the girls are at that level yet. For Good would make a fantastic sing off song though.
