Well I was listening to the commentary for Black Orchid, and huge surprise, Janet Fielding doesn't like it. Just like all the other stories.

I think the Restoration Team should make her say something positive about Doctor Who on a dvd. Just once. Please.

Perhaps she's commenting on her acting?

Black Orchid is my all-time favourite DW story, and I am v excited about the DVD. Missing scenes! Lovely!!

Janet Fielding's commentaries are a bit one-note, I have often found. In fact, especially when paired up with Peter Davison, there's an awful lot of negativity going on. The pair seem to shout each other down in their attempts to sound more pissed off than the other. I quite enjoyed Warriors of the Deep, despite its iffy monsters and effects, and sometimes wondered if I was watching the same thing as PD and JF.

Bring on the Black Orchid!!

I've listened to a few of the commentaries when those two have been paired up and it just seems like good natured banter to me. Although she wouldn't like me saying it because she's not an old lady, PD comes across as a cheeky schoolboy, with Janet as the more authoritative schoolteacher, who'll joke along but tell him if he's gone too far.

Janet's a moaning minnie just like her character Tegan Jovanka. always whining about getting back to heathrow, rather than enjoying travelling in the Tardis. At least RTD has shown us that companions should enjoy their adventures not be whining all the time. Even Donna has shown more gratitude and appreciation in her two adventures this season than Tegan did in her whole bunch of adventures. I don't know WHAT Nyssa saw in her, to be honest!

She always sounds as if she was conned into being a DW assistant (who are well known for just running around and asking basic questions) instead of some Women's Lib. rep.

I've always found her commentaries more amusing than anything, especially when she constantly slags herself off, coming out with comments like 'look at my hair! what was I thinking??'

I think that too.

Could explain why she decided to become an agent instead.

To be fair to her - she's not exactly alone in her criticism of Black Orchid on the commentary. In fact Davison is probably the more negative one for once.

I always find her and Davison's commentaries to be very enjoyable; they have a good banter type relationship and it's not like they're criticising everyone else and praising themselves. Both are very ready to criticise their own performances if required. What they tend to be influenced by is how much they enjoyed making the episode - they usually mention guest stars they had a laugh with for instance - but in this case they don't seem to have found making it a bit of a chore.

If Fielding has a fault it tends to be that she brings up how old fashioned the staging is a bit too often. It's true but is a fault of most Television of the time not just Doctor Who.

I've heard quite a few of her commentaries (Earthshock, Castrolvalva, Resurrection and Logopolis for instance) and I must admit I don't feel she's critical or negative.

She comes across - for me at least - as being very fond of her time on the show, but also finding some of it quite funny looking back. She does talk about how certain things could be done much better now with new technology and the budget, but I don't think its fair at all to say she just moans.

I've found her commentaries funny and insightful.

I've just finished listening to the commentary on Black Orchid - I always find PD and JF to be entertaining. Sometimes think Matthew Waterhouse and Sarah Sutton struggle to get a word in, and often don't have anything interesting to say anyway.

Thought Sarah could have said a bit more about Black Orchid as it was her 'time to shine' playing the dual roles.

Most of JF's comments during Black Orchid centre on how cold she was during the filming of the fancy dress party.

Waterhouse will try to get in the story of when he was drunk on set.

Well, I'm pleased for you all to have actually been able to hear the commentary. I ordered the DVD from CDWOW (as I had a discount) and according to the tracker, it is still "Pre-release".

Not the first time from this bunch of charlatans. Play.com usually send items out before the release date so that I receive them on the due date.

Please take my advice on these idiots - do not order from them!

I recently pre-ordered a boxset on the 14th Feb from them that was due for release on 18th Feb, I was still waiting for it at the beginning of April! The only explanation they kept giving was 'our supplier has not got back to us' - but yet they were still advertising the item as in stock!!

Its good to have peter davison and janet fielding entertaining commentry, after all the story itself is as dull as ditchwater--one suspect who we see in the opening scenes, a very contrived way to make the doctor look responsible (even by dr who standards). Nowadays they wd get all that plot in the pretitle teaser sequence!

Of all the people who've done commentaries for these DVDs that I've listened to, I've noticed that it's the Peter Davison group, especially Peter and Janet, who are the most critical of the series. They tend to judge it a lot by today's standards and spend a lot of the time ripping the old shows apart, whereas most of the other commentaries from other periods of the show seem to have more enthusiasm for their work on the show and a bit more affection for it. That's the impression I've had.

Nice to see statutory innuendo levels being maintained even outside the Inn

Miserable Lis Sladen! I realise she's now Queen Of Telly (and quite right too), but she's even more negative than Jan F. I accept that K9 & Co is not a top-notch masterpiece of telly, but it's not totally irredeemable. Miserable Lis utterly tears it to pieces, and won't hear a word in its defence!

Wasn't she just miffed at having to wait 25 years for a proper spin off show?

How dare these bloody actors tear the show to pieces! That's what fan forums are for, isn't it?

Sarah Sutton can't remember *anything* she did in Dr Who, so it's not a surprise her commentries are so poor. What's more surprising is people still pay her to do them.

We had Sarah on two occasions, both times she remembered bugger all, and just reminised about her gerbils and hoovering at home. A dreadful waste of time but made more annoying at the fact she told us that she has all her videos (as it was then) at home, for free... Memo to Ms Sutton : Try being more professional next time, do some reasearch, you've the vids at home !
