Just wondered if anyone else experienced this, I realised a few years ago that almost everytime after eating Chinese food, particularly cheap Chinese food I ended up not being able to sleep, feeling breathless and having palpitations. I read up a bit on MSG and its effects and concluded I must be a bit sensitive to it so cut right down on eating chinese out. Now the other day I had a take away pizza and had all of the same symptoms again and ended up awake half the night feeling terrible.
Is there a way to know (where restaurants etc.. don't list it) which are the really MSG high foods? Or a way to counter its effects - I can't take feeling like that again!

If you look on the other MSG thread I also mentioned about the affects of MSG, the terrible thirst you get after having a chinese! My sis in law is always sick after eating chinese if they use MSG. Some places do have notices to say they dont use MSG. The best thing you can do really is ask them before you order.

Ah, didn't think to do a search for a similar thread first - thanks for that though will go and check it out now.
Yeah the thirst thing is terrible, I downed about 3 mugs of water in the middle of the night last night, it was worse than a hangover!

You've described very common side effects of MSG. It's awful.

So awful in fact that some good chinese restaurants (in London that I know of but probably elsewhere too) even advertise themselves as MSG free.

They'll throw it on pizzam anywhere really, especially cheap food.

I'm allergic to MSG. I come out in hives, i get palpitations, can't sleep and feel hyper. I also get horribly itchy, it's like my bones itch, one that you just can't scratch.

We have one chinese that we use, they know me, and know not to put it into anything I order. They also tell me if anything I order has a premade paste that contains it.

They don't have to use it, if you like chinese, ask them not to put it in, and explain that you are intolerant. I love chinese, and wouldn't like to have to live without it forever.

What exactly is it? Is it like a powder or something they add like one would add salt and pepper for example?

Damn, was hoping for somewhere more mainstream. Although there is one that's semi-local, it's always dark and pretty much empty, save for some Chinese people who openly gawp at you like some kind of alien visitor. Awkward place to shop, really.

Sorry.

Try to see if you can get it on line?
