Sanyo DVD Player Subtitles on by default

My Gran has a Sanyo DVD-SL20 DVD Player and on a few DVDs, when you start the disc playing, the subtitles are displayed even though they haven't been selected. You then have to manually turn them off each time you start playing the disc and it can be quite annoying.

I've tried all sorts but every time these few discs are inserted, the subtitles appear, some other discs are fine though.

Can anyone advise? Is it the DVD player or a slight incompatibility with the discs.

PS. The DVD player is now 5 years old.

I get that with a lot of DVDs that I watch - often BBC's own DVDs - on any of my DVD players/recorders. I suspect that it is a setting within the individual disc - that the manufacturer can default to subtitles on or subtitles off - rather than a problem with the DVD player. As you say, the first you know of it is when the film or programme actually starts playing, and the subtitles kick in, and then you have to reach for the remote a second time to adjust the subtitles setting from English to None.

Thanks for your reply.

The DVDs that bring the subtitles up are actually BBC DVDs (or rather DVDs made in conjunction with BBC), I'm pretty sure the rest of my Gran's DVDs don't have subtitles by default.

So you're finding the same as me. BBC DVDs, by default, have subtitles turned on. Most other DVDs don't.

It must definitely be BBC DVDs, originally I was wondering if it was perhaps an incompatibility between DVD and Player.
