Hi all,

My Nan is moving house "sometime in the summer".

She is moving from a council property to a housing association one.

We are waiting for her new bungalow to be finished with all the necessary adaptations to meet her needs.

The problem is we don't know the date she is due to move - all we've been told is "sometime in the summer" and it could be fairly short notice but I wouldn't have thought any less than a week.

How much notice would we need to give BT to move her telephone line/number to the new house? I believe that there is a line already installed at the new house. How long would it take to move the number and what would the procedure be?

I also need to find out what would happen with regards to her panic button system which she has associated to the phone line provided by social services, rather than BT.

Many thanks for any advice.

Kind regards,

Steve.

Steve,

Have a look at this page on the BT website:

http://www2.bt.com/btPortal/applicat...nt.tm_overview

It looks like you have to give at least 5 full working days notice, although the contract states 14 days.

Not sure that she would be able to keep her number - she would have to be moving within the same exchange area to have any chance of that. They do have a redirection service but I would imagine it costs.

Try and give the full 14 days notice as it's a new build and there will be a connection fee.

They've built several of these new bungalows together - my Nan and my Mum have been to see one, which was finished and she was due to move into a couple of weeks ago but they realised she needed a special bathroom installing so she's having another one on the same site with a custom bathroom fitted, which will be ready for her "sometime" in the summer.

I've been reliability informed (by my Mum) that the bungalow they went to see had telephone sockets in every room, well at least the living room and bedrooms and maybe the kitchen - but she wants cordless phones in every room so I'm looking out for a quad cordless set for her that's easy to use.

So, if there are phone sockets in every room there might be a line already installed.

There will be cables installed in your property to a junction box, this will have been done by the builders contractors, there could even be a live (but not 'connected') line into the property from the street. In any case you will need to pay the connection charge of £125, the chances are that BT will have to come out anyway, they could we install there own sockets, I got them to do this in my property.
