Home Theatre Set Up Help Please!!!

Hi, I am a complete novice when it comes to setting up many different components using anything other than basic scart leads. I have the following (the tv and sky hd coming next week).

Sony Bravia KDL 46X3000U
Sony DAV-DZ230 Home Theatre System
Sony PS3
Sky HD

Could anybody kindly tell me the best way to connect these four things together to mean that I don't have to switch one off to use another and that they all utilise the home theatre speakers if this is possible.

I have been reading about issues with the DAV-DZ230 not having a particular audio output which could cause me issues but I am genuinely such a novice that I would appreciate anybody's assistance in getting the best connection set up available to me.

I know that the TV has 3 x HDMI sockets if this is any help...

Many thanks in advance.

The Home Theatre kit connects via HDMI to the TV HDMI1
The Sky HD box connects via HDMI to the TV HDMI2
The PS3 I have no experience of, if it does HDMI than use the third HDMI socket on the TV.

Your biggest problem is the Home Theatre kit. You cannot connect any external digital audio source to it at all. So there is no way for example that you can plug the digital audio out from the Sky box to the Home Theatre kit to listen to Sky movies in Surround Sound.

It looks like it has a mini jack socket on the front for analogue audio in from an mp3 player or similar but that won't be much good. Even if you could hook it up to the Sky box you will only get stereo sound. You won't get true surround sound that way.

So really the only way you can listen to Sky or the PS3 is via the telly speakers. Which is a bit of a bummer really.

Replace the Home Theatre thing with a proper DVD player and a proper surround sound system. Connect your DVD player to your TV and the surround sound amp. Connect everything else to the surround sound amp. Connect the surround sound amp to its six speakers. Enjoy real surround sound from all your stuff.

Thanks for all your help.

Just as a query, broadz - can you recommend a better surround sound system, I have a preference towards a Sony product given that I can use the theatre sync option, but am not sure which equipment would have the desired effect to which you describe!!! I don't want to spend ridiculous amounts of money on the surround sound however I would like to take advantage of my equipment's capabilities!!!

Thanks

Definatley invest in a proper amp 6.1 dts-es etc & let that do the job of giving you good sound. The PS3 is okay , but a half decent DVD player will give better results.

Sorry, I can't. My surround sound amp is eight or nine years old - they don't make it anymore. I haven't looked at what is on the market nowadays to be able to recommend an alternative.

All the latest will be able to handle everything you throw at it, as long as it has enough inputs.

Same here, I have a Sony STR-DE495 home cinema amp from 1999

If you just want something to act as a sound ehnancement system for all your tv needs then this is a bargain (seriously thinking of buying one myself at that price).

Its a straight forward 5.1 amp with oodles of connections for your devices, its a Sony so its quality and your existing speakers sould work a treat on it.

have you had a look at the Sony HT-DDW890?

I have this and am very happy with it.

Its only £220 as well if you have the room for it.

Have a look at the Onkyo TX-SR605, has optical inputs and is HDMI compatible.

You would then connect Sky HD via HDMI to the TV, optical to the amp for DD5.1.

Connect PS3 via HDMI to the amp then HDMI to the TV, the TV will supply the video whilst the amp will give you the new HD audio formats either from the PS3 or from the Onkyo's onboard decoders.

Can be found for around £350, probably one of the cheapest ways to get DD5.1 and the new HD audio formats.

If you just require basic DD5.1 then manufacturers like Denon or Yamaha are worth a look. You can get some discontinued models very cheap.

Deno AVR1507

Yamaha RXV361

Then you will of course need to choose some speakers, Richer Sounds would be a good place to start.

Fuzzybint - Going back to you first post - If you have the 46X3000U and the DAV-DZ230 you can use the Bravia Theatre Sync feature through the HDMI connection. This turns the Home Theatre System off when you turn the TV off. And if you turn the Home Theatre System on, the TV will switch on as well.

Thanks for all the guidance...

After further research I am going to get the Sony HT-SF1100 Home Theatre System which seems to more than cover the bases.

I wouldn't have known where to start without a push in the right direction!

seems to be ok with 2 hdmi input and 1 output so route everything through it

some sky remotes can control the volume of the amps as well !!
