Is it possible to pay a cheque addressed to someone else into your own bank account provided you have the other person's permission? How do I go about this?

The name on the cheque has to match the name on the account. as far as I am aware. They have very tough rules to avoid fraud.

yup the name on the cheque has to match the name on the account so if your account name is Mrs A N Other and the cheque is made out to Mrs A Example or even Miss A N Other it can't be put in your account

If the cheque has A/C Payee Only across the middle, it can only go into an account in that name. Very few cheques nowadays don't have that written on, so it's just not possible, even with permission.

I recall asking a friend to put a cheque payable to me into her account, as I was overdrawn at the time and couldn't get the money out. This she did and gave me the money , but this was about 15 years ago, have they tightened things up since then?

Yes - it's been a few years since you could do that.

Yes, you used to be able to pay someone elses cheque into your account if you got them to sign it on the back, but I'm afraid they stopped that practice many years ago.

You could also open a building society account in the name of Joe Bloggs, or whatever, and pay the cheque into that account, as no proof of who you were was required.

Sady now all stopped, I'm afraid!
