She is originally from Siberia, Russia, where she began her dance career. She's competed at Blackpool and placed 2nd in 2004 and was a Latin semi-finalist in 2007. She is ranked within the top 12 in the world. She is European trained and, I feel, will make the transition to SCD quite nicely.
Out of interest, what is the basis for saying she is ranked within the top 12 in the world? I assumed rankings were determined by the WD&DSC, and she doesn't feature anywhere on here, either as Kristina Rihanoff or Kristina Pchenitchnykh.

Regarding the rumours, I'm slightly cautious about believing she will be doing Strictly just on the basis of a myspace page which doesn't look authentic to me... partly because it says she is 98 , and partly because all the text and pictures are cut and paste from her official website. Although I can't see why anyone would go to the bother of making it up.

Kristina's myspace page is authentic. As to the cut and paste bit, her website contains a lot of information which she wanted used on her myspace page. As to her age, does any woman want to reveal that?

With regard to her being ranked within the top 12 in the world, I mentioned it as I thought may be of interest to SCD fans.

At the end of the day, Kristina is a talented, dedicated, and wonderful performer and instructor. I hope that SCD fans will enjoy her performances in the upcoming season.

maybe Corky has some pull since his son Mark and former ward Julianne have won the last three seasons of DWTS.
To clarify, Corky Ballas has absolutely no influence whatsoever with SCD or DWTS.

I think it is a testament to both his and Shirley's training that Julianne and Mark are both DWTS champions and that Derek was a semi-finalist last season.

Those three continue to deliver outstanding performances every time they take to the ballroom.

I'm not saying the cut and paste factor automatically makes it fake, I'm just saying it makes me question authenticity. As I said in my earlier post, I can't see why anyone would want to fake it!

Her being in the top 12 is of interest, I just wondered how this is determined.

It's from Kristina herself. I know her, but have been shy to say so.

But that still doesn't tell us how it is determined. Anyone can say they're in the Top 12 but as katie_p says she doesn't appear on the Official World Series And World Ranking Website of the World Dance Council so where is she ranked in the Top 12???

The world ranking relies a lot on how many competitions a couple enters, as points are awared to each couple for each competition, depening on how they placed. So, for example, a couple who dances the UK Open, Asian Open, British Open, European, World, International, Dutch Open and World Masters and places at the top end of the final will have a higher ranking than a couple who just dances the World, European and British and wins all three.

For instance, Bryan and Carmen often weren't right at the top of the world ranking, as they only usually entered 4 competitions a year, however everyone knows they were by far the best dancers in the world, proof being that at Blackpool last year they secured 52 out of a possible 55 first placings, their nearest competition taking just 3 out of 55. That speaks for itself.

Kristina made the semi final (top 12) in four dances at Blackpool, which is the world's biggest and most important competition. A lot of people take Blackpool results to determine a couple's true ranking, as literally EVERYBODY is always there. I think it's sure to say that based on this, she was within the top 12 in the world when she was competing, yes.

So as much as I wish the WDC ranking was a completely reliable source (My God, how much would I just LOVE to see Sergey and Melia as the world's number one! Of course in my eyes they are anyway!) the fact that the top 12 still features couples who have split up months ago and no longer dance together, as well as placing Andrei and Valeria above Ricardo and Yulia(!), it definitely can't be used as a definitive source!

Whom they employ is in the gift of the BBC.

Pending a final decision announced by the BBC it would be a regrettable discourtesy by a proposed newcomer to wave goodbye to the UK champion, speaking of her in the past tense.

I don't know that much of how the dance world works, but that still seems a bit odd to me. Wouldn't she do better to say she was a Blackpool semi-finalist, and even to spell out what that means, than to say she is ranked in the top twelve, as if there is a formal, if not definitive, system of ranking to back it up? In another area, I would find someone claiming rankings based on a competition 'a lot of people take to be' the true ranking as pretty misleading. Especially when that competition has already produced another set of results that don't include her!

Is it still viable for Darren and Lilia to say they are ranked in the top sixteen in the world, as they were at the same event?

As I said before, Kristina was ranked within the top twelve when she was competing, and of course she isn't competing anymore, so the same would go for Darren and Lilia, they were ranked within the top sixteen when they were competing, and of course they aren't competing anymore either. I don't see anything wrong with the word ranking, personally. If I had been judged by former champions of the event itself to rank as top twelve, then I'd be more than happy to accept that.

Of course, time moves on (even though the new results were announced only 15 hours before MM_Designs's post) and there have been a new set of results now for rankings to be determined from, even if they won't stay too accurate for long with the return of competitors such as Slavik, Wentink, Timok and Killick, all due to come back any time soon.

I think to the show it matters not one bit how Kristina was ranked, as every single one of the professionals on the show is now an ex-competitor with no current ranking anyway.

I wasn't asking because I thought it mattered to Strictly particularly! I was just curious because I looked her up when her name was first mentioned, and was a bit surprised from the results I'd seen that she could be ranked in the top twelve, however good they were I didn't see how one competition on its own could justify that. But I understand what you mean about it referring to Blackpool, obviously one of those things that makes sense in the dance world!

I always like to have a sense of where the pros are in the scheme of things (just nosey I guess), if you take everything at face value they are all champions, they all have these titles after their names which, if you look them up, can often be relatively minor (although obviously still achievements).

I believe MM_Designs knows Kristina both personally and professionally - hence saying how wonderful she is lol.

I'm quite looking forward to seeing her, but not at the expense of Nicole

I just don't like the idea of splitting up Nicole and Matthew - it's a bit of a slap in the face for her IMHO.

I could understand Karen going (by choice even), but not Nicole.

I think Kristina is wonderful, and I'm not related to her. Never even met her, although my partner has - just enjoy her dancing a lot.

It's okay, just teasing - I've read your other post explaining you know her.
