I usually buy a large (grande/what-have-you) double mocha when I purchase from a coffee shop.

And it's with 2% milk and whipped cream.
(not every day )

Lately I've been doing large double latté with soy milk.
And I have to say, not bad, not bad at all.

Anyone else?

I mostly drink my coffee black, but I make myself a soya latte two or three times a week. It's lovely! Sometimes I'll add a bit of hazelnut syrup, too (special treat! ) I also have the occasional coffee with soya cream. 'tis nice.

Does the soy milk give it a sweeter taste (scuse my ignorance but I've no idea what soy milk tastes like)? Also in terms of calories is it better than using semi skimmed?

If you mean sweeter-tasting in coffee than cows' milk, sorry I can't tell you as I haven't used any of that for several years (I'm vegan), and have pretty much always taken my coffee black anyway.

I can't be sure without looking it up, but I think semi-skimmed is around 48 cals per 100ml, compared to Alpro soya milk (just checked the label on mine) which has 43 per 100ml, so not a huge difference really, calorie-wise. I'm sure that many other brands contain fewer calories, but Alpro is better quality IMO.

Having said that, Alpro also do a 'light', unsweetened version which I believe contains fewer calories than skimmed cows' milk. I have used both in my lattes and can't really tell the difference taste-wise.

In the interests of finding out I am going to have a soy latte tomorrow and will report back on if I think its sweeter than cows milk.

i *think* (but am sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!) that Soy milk is lower in fat (seeing as its protein derived) but higher in sugar?

I've only started doing it recently, myself.
It's actually somewhat difficult to describe the flavor (American here ), other than there's a nutty sort of undertone.
I take the soy latte with about 3 tea-spoons of plain granulated sugar.

The following link breaks down the nutritional info of soy vs. whole milk:

Please do, although I usually drink my coffee black, I am partial to the odd latte and have often wondered about the other milks. I usually have skimmed or semi skimmed UHT at home, I am not a big Milk person, it can make me bad.

Totally off topic, but I love the name LeftCoastal - it means an awful lot to me, despite not knowing anything about the poster with this nick! I haven't even looked at the profile.

Suffice to say, I used to work at a place called Coastal before I started up here on my own!

Nope not sweeter than cows milk. Actually was quite plain tasting. I had a "Starbucks" soy latte.

I put the Starbucks in quotes as its an internal one within my company and although the cups say that they "proudly brew Starbucks coffee" that is where the similarity ends! They brew it with all the skill of someone who has never made a coffee in their life slopping what they assume to be the correct quantities of coffee and milk into a cup. Doesn't matter whether its latte, cappucino or flat - it all looks the same!

It wasn't as milky tasting as cows milk - stupid as that sounds even a semi skimmed latte has an edge of creaminess to it. It tasted more like skimmed milk does if you drink it on its own.

I think it might have benefited from maybe some sugar but I don't take sugar in coffee so didn't want to add any.

Forgot to add - I only bought it from them as had a get a coffee free card - don't want you to think I whinge about them and then continue to use them for normal lattes.

Me too lol but I have a son wth a dairy allergy...

Luckily (or unluckily depending on how you look at it!) we've discovered he also has a soy allergy so now we stick to rice milk - which for me is equally as bad in coffee!
