The Utd squad of 99 had alot more strength in depth than Villas currently has too, so they were able to go all out to win all 3 competitions. They won the CL final without Keane and Scholes. If we had 2 key players like that missing there's not anyone waiting on the bench who's ready to step in and fill their boots, it normally forces us to change the way we set up to accomodate them.

A reminder its on tonight after 30 mins of babbling
No Milner it seems and Guzan and Shorey are in ?Barry is back tonight thats important Guzan; L Young, Davies, Knight, Shorey; Gardner, Barry, Petrov, A Young; Carew, Agbonlahor. Subs: Friedel, Salifou, Harewood, Delfouneso, Bannan, Lowry, Albrighton. A Difficult game tonight I think , I hope the team and Carew have a bit more get up and go than the last 60 mins against Everton This still takes back seat to finishing in the Top 4 for me |

Bit unlucky not to win tonight i thought. I did expect a bit more from CSKA than about the 2 shots they produced. No reason why we cant still go through although it will no doubt be tough over there to get a result but we can do it if we keep playing like we have been.

Looking forward to the Chelsea match. I'd probably take a draw given the "Gus factor". It'd be great to get a win and silence a few more doubters.

Sounds like Villas tactic for the next leg |

Chelsea are looking pretty solid, a lot more so than past games.
Villa looking solid but not quite up at that level yet, playing to their position if that makes sense |

Time for a reality check ?
Out of the FA cup , a Difficult away leg against CSKA to stay in the Uefa cup and now down to fourth We must aim for and achieve 4th place in the EPL We seem to be predictable ,pushing wide balls to Milner and Young who are flicking in balls to Gabbys head , Heskey seems to play to deep or to wide , surely he should be in the middle to nod the ball down to Gabby And sadly Gabby cannot head a ball . We need something more in front of goals |

A loss in the FA Cup to Everton, a draw against CSKA Moscow and now a loss against Chelsea, not a great week.
Villa were poor today. The performance in the second half was better than the first but the crossing and delivery into the box throughout the whole game was shocking. |

I think MON got it wrong tactically today. The old 4-5-1 counter attacking formation would have worked much better because in the first half in particular Chelsea were given far to much time on the ball in midfield and seemed to pick up all the loose balls in that area. The exact same thing happened when we played them away. We had to lose again sometime though and i'd have taken a 1 point over 5th at the start of the season at this stage never mind 7 or 4 as it may be at the end of today. Let's hope we can pick it up again against Stoke next Sunday.

Arsenal drawing 0-0 with Sunderland has made the result against Chelsea a little easier to swallow.
Villa in 4th, 6 points ahead of Arsenal with 12 games left. |

We must've rattled the woodwork more times than any other team in the league by a country mile this season. It seems to happen just about every game we play in!

Relatively poor week but only to be expected, tough matches and it's difficult to keep winning. It's how they react which is important. The Stoke match ain't going to be easy. Their away record is poor but how many times have teams come to Villa Park with a poor away record and won. Middlesborough being the most recent. I think one of these days everything is going to go right and we are going to hammer someone. |

The squad for Thursday has been announced.
There's a few big names missing so it's clear where priorities lie. Last edited by Woolleybear39 : 24-02-2009 at 10:29. Reason: Link wouldn't work |

Can't say i'm best pleased about this. The people i really feel sorry for are the Villa fans who've paid alot of money for the trip out there to basically see us as good as give up our place in the competition when we're getting to its latter stages. I thought after being out of Europe for 7 years would encourage MON to take it seriously for the fans, but we've ended up only actually putting out our best side in 2 games of the whole competition (Ajax and the home leg of this tie).
It makes you wonder why we bothered starting our season early and what all the fuss about finishing in the top 6 last season to get into the UEFA. Now that we appear to be putting all our eggs in one basket i think MON will get a bit of criticism if we still miss out on a top 4 finish. It's not as if he didn't know we were going to be involved in 4 competitions during the 2 transfer windows. |

Oh dear......I was hoping it was a link to the BBC website and would hopelessly inaccurate, sadly its isn't and its not
![]() The midfield looks very lightweight with only Gardener getting my vote for such a big match I am thinking even Marlon will get a start in this game |

A 2-0 loss to the Russians. I feel sorry for those that travelled such a distance to watch this surrender by our understrength team.
It is always disapointing to lose but to do so before the match ball is kicked doesn't sit well. Martin O'Neill will say that qualification for the Champions League is the priority and of course that is correct however the continued talk of Villa having a small squad is getting very tiresome. Martin has been Villa manager since August 2006. Ample time has passed for him to build the squad. If Villa do qualify for the Champions League next season he will have to be more than busy in the summer transfer market to compete. |

I'm annoyed at us giving up our European campaign so tamely too. The fans deserved better after our long european absence. We've ended up losing one of our best players (Bouma) for nearly the whole season playing in a tournament where it seemed MON couldn't get out of quickly enough in the end. It makes last season and the early start of this seem pointless.
I'm interested in what will happen next season if say we did get 4th and are in a similar position at this stage a year from now - will we give up in the champions league to stop our players becoming 'tired' so we can finish 4th again? We've only played our strongest available side twice in the UEFA cup and haven't exactly had long cup runs so i'm interested to know why our players are so fatigued already that they cant play 2 games in a week. MON's done an excellent job but now that all our eggs are in one basket, if we still miss out on 4th he'l have some explaining to do. |

Istanbull my lord
Very disappointed with MON for the first time. The time we've spent in this competition including sell-out home fixtures and we just surrender it. Even more sickening now Man City are the faves for the tournament
![]() Along with Stan Collymore I slagged Harry Redknapp off for putting out a rubbish team and we go and do the same. We expect such things from clubs like Spurs but not Villa. It goes against everything we stand for and our club moto; PREPARED. If we don't win against Stoke it's going to look bad, if we don't make it into the top 4 it's going to look even worse. Given that MON has now spent 80million of Randy's cash, I don't think the constant references to a small squad should be being made. I'm also alarmed at the sheer number English players we have who lack skill and creativity. Even if we do get into the Champions League we ain't going to last long playing the long ball game like we do in the EPL. Yes we are great on the counter, but I can't see the likes of Zat Knight and Curtis Davies keeping out Europe's finest. Even Everton managed to get some half-decent foreign signings (Cahill, Arteta, etc). If we are going to compete in the Champions League, we are going to have to do the same. |

As a non Villa fan, I personally think that cup was there for the taking for Villa and it's such a cop-out
The pressure on Villa is now massive to finish in that top 4 slot, if they don't, then O'Neil has seriously messed up imo Perhaps being a League One side I fail to comprehend the grandeur of finishing 4th...but I'd give my right arm to say I supported a team that won a European Cup...a competition that included some pretty big teams ahead of....I support a team that finished 4th in it's league and just made it past the group stages of the Champions League but hey we've got Gareth Barry, marvellous' I think it's this attitude that means O'Neill will never manage a bigger club in England, he wouldn't be in my top 5 for the Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea or Arsenal jobs |

Please lets not forget that 0nly the top3 finishers in the EPL are guaranteed a CL spot , if Arsenal were to win the CL and finish 5th , 6th or lower they would still gain entry to next years CL at the expense of the team that finished in 4th (Villa) soon Arsene will realise that top 4 is beyond them and do the opposite of MoN and play weaker teams in the EPL and stronger teams in the CL , won't he ?
Its another crazy situation where as a team involved in the FA cup and Europe they have needed to play 5 games in a 2 week period Personally I would have liked to have seen Fridel and Petrov play against CSKA and wtf happened to Carew and his poorly back ? UTV |
