I was not in favour of Houllier's appointment from the start as 6 years away was too long imo plus his health issues. I think we were crying out for a dynamic, younger manager but conservative Randy opted for what he (imo) thought was a safe pair of hands. It has certainly backfired so far! Part of my British sense of fair play thinks GH should get a chance to bring in his own players in Jan but I think that he has been so bad that I would cut my losses now. There is no fight in the team and no leadership on or off the pitch and those are 2 of the ingredients of a relegation team. Yesterday I would say only Albrighton put in a shift and the senior pro's all looked disinterested and depressed. I genuinely hate to say this about a manager who has only been here 3 and a half months but overall I think he has to go. I would not expect miracles from a new manager but surely there are plenty out there who could do a better job.

I don't think we can blame Houllier completely for the current mess. Let's look at the squad he's got to work with:

Brad Friedel: past it, average at best.
Brad Guzan: dunno
James Collins: ok
Carlos Cuéllar: ok
Curtis Davies: not there
Habib Beye: just back from injury
Richard Dunne: crap and a liability for giving fouls
Eric Lichaj: young
Stephen Warnock: useless
Luke Young: ok
Stewart Downing: ok
Jonathan Hogg: very inexperienced
Stephen Ireland: crap
Isaiah Osbourne: ?
Stilian Petrov: good but not great
Nigel Reo-Coker: alright
Moustapha Salifou: ?
Steve Sidwell: rubbish
Ashley Young: best player in the team but still doesn't do that much really.
Gabriel Agbonlahor: embarrassingly bad
John Carew: never scores
Emile Heskey: couldn't hit a barn door.
Barry Bannan: Good but still developing
Nathan Delfouneso: difficult to say, probably average-good.

Is Houllier being offered the money to go out and buy new players? He desperately needs it...

Oh deary me, all the teams below us having been getting points recently. West Ham are now above us!

I don't expect us to win against Chelsea, but what I do expect this time is a good performance. If it ends up like the Man City game, then the manager and players should should just piss off.

The main game for Houllier though will be the Sunderland match. If we lose that, it's gonna get very ugly and I can see no way back.

Jan window is up. It's make or break Houllier. Prove your worth.

I'd agree with you. Plus youve had injuries and lots of youngsters playing, hasnt been an easy time to come in as a new manager.

I see your point, but-Ireland and a majority of the youth players aside-this is mostly the team that finished 6th three times running. The only thing that's really changed this season is the manager. It certainly isn't fair to blame this mess entirely on Houllier...MON, Randy and the players themselves must all take some blame. But a good manager is someone who can take what he is given and get the best out of them until he can bring in reinforcements, and Houllier has failed to do that. I just don't have any faith in him, but IF he does stay on and turn things around, I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Anyway, happy new year to all Villa fans. Haven't got a shred of optimism about today. Best of luck, Villa.

1-1 at half time...not bad at all! Still have 7-1 thrashing in the back of my mind though, but I don't think we'll get thrashed today. At least we look like we give a shit, but we need to stop giving stupid penalties away.

Every time I say I have no confidence in Villa (Man United earlier in the season too) we do really well. I need to say it more often!

There's something dodgy going on here. I still don't trust the ref one bit and he may cost us the game.

I agree there...Mason's been shocking. First chance he gets, he gives us a booking, yet Chelsea are getting away with much more. Iffy.

Friedel showing he's definitely NOT past it. Two great saves in the last few minutes.

Don't speak too soon - now back to 3-3.

Hopefully the Russian mafia financed team won't take the lead again.

My head is still spinning from those last ten minutes!

SO glad Clark got an equaliser, it was the least we deserved...delighted with the result, can't fault anybody today. He's still got a long way to go to convince me , but there's hope for Houllier yet. Keep proving me wrong, Gerard.

Referee Lee Mason was shockingly bad.

Me too. Well done today, you could have won it, then lost it, so an away draw at Chelsea, with a performance put in too is a decent overall result.

Can't fault them for effort today. Dunne (who was otherwise pretty good) and Albrighton's mistakes almost cost us but we battled back for a deserved point with Albrighton atoning for his earlier error with a great cross. The important thing now is to carry the same effort into Wednesday and cut out the silly mistakes.

I can't understand how they can play so well today after being so bad at Eastlands last week.

Not bad, but we should be ahead...how Heskey missed that sitter is beyond me. Need to do more in the final third.

A dire second half performance so far. Anything but a win will be abysmal.

No subs at all. Now 1-0 down in our ground back with all of our best players back. Teams are winning below us. We're screwed with Houllier in charge.

I just cannot believe it. I'm sorry but our fans extremely fickle. Just because we equalized at the last min against a struggling Chelsea team doesn't mean we will automatically improve again. I had no confidence we'll win this tonight and now we can write it off.

No pride. No passion. No hope. From 6th to 18th in the space of six months. Houllier must go NOW.
