Friedel has looked shaky so far this season. I'm prepared to give him another ten games or so to prove himself because there's no doubt he's a quality keeper, but he can't keep making these sort of errors where he just palms the ball out to a waiting striker. Shorey should have done better mind.

I think we've played alright so far, but I'm glad half-time came when it did. Carew has looked good apart from giving away the odd silly free kick, and Gabby once again shows he's at his best when he has do things by instinct and doesn't have time to think about things.

Hopefully MON can sure things up a bit at the back and we can get Ash a bit more involved in the game.

Much more solid second half performance Never really felt we were under pressure at all. We couldn't keep the ball and I was a little worried about making such big changes to the defence in the middle of the half, but it all worked out fine in the end.

A great three points.

LOL....why does Villa always seem to lose at home against lower league teams, and also make a habit of getting knocked out early. Oh well.

I'm actually pleased we didn't equalise near the end, because the last thing we needed was to play thirty minutes more needless football.

I think Man Utd started a trend a few years ago about not been that bothered about the league cup

I personally would like to see us do well in Europe and the EPL

Good result today - these are the sort of games we dropped a lot of silly points in during last season. Chelsea away next week (with the UEFA Cup game on Thursday - but I imagine MON will rest a fair few for that game) - obviously anything we can pick up there is going to be a bonus.

I look at the table and the most important thing for me is that we're doing well in comparison to the teams we should be fighting for 5th. We're 4 points ahead of Man City, 6 ahead of Everton, 7 ahead of Pompey and 11 ahead of Spurs. Of course it's great that we're in 3rd, but it's very unlikely that's going to last.

Well you dont have a big enough squad. Thats the only problem. If by some quirk of fate the first XI stay fit you can beat anyone. You are a better team than 92/93 and everyone thought you could win the league then. Keep Young and Gabby fit cos we could use them next year!!!

You can have Gabby cuz more often than not, he's useless, apart from the one time every 6/7 games he makes something out of nothing, then everyone raves about him. I think most Villa fans that see him week in, week out would agree. Gabby is definitely not United's sort of player.

Young's not going anywhere, though.

On the injury front - well, we got lucky last season with so few injuries, but this season we've got two players for every position (except up front), most of them of decent quality. So if we have two or three injuries it's not going to be a complete disaster like it would have been last season. It's a testament to the quality of the first team that players like Milner and Cuellar, who'd get in most other teams outside the top 4, haven't started a game for us in the PL yet. We still have Sidwell and Bouma to come back from injury too.

I accept the Gabby thing. Btw he is the thickest footballer i have ever seen interviewed ever!

Young was an absolute genius signing and that why it will cost us £30m to bring him to a proper club next summer! (joke!)

My point was that in 92 you had a good side wanting to win the league so this year (injury permiting) why not aim for the champions league?????

Agreed (about the £30m bit).

It's difficult to compare the team now to the team we had in 92/93. But one thing you can say with certainty is that these days, there is a much bigger gap between the top teams and the lesser teams in the EPL. In 92/93, Villa were 2nd because there were a lot of mediocre teams in the division. United were the only standout team really. We managed 74 points if memory serves, and that was from 42 games - so that'd be about 67/68 points now, which would only just be enough for 5th!

In all fairness having just typed all that, we decided not to play properly once we were out of the title race, so we could have ended up with around 80 or so points at the end of the season. All ifs and buts though.

As for this season, the top 4 are going to be very hard to dislodge. We can aim for the CL and of course it'd be fantastic to get 4th, but realistically, our first aim has to be the best of the rest. Liverpool were by far the weakest of the top 4 last season, but even they seem to be getting their act together. They're not going to win the league but they should be comfortably 4th - so I think CL qualification is an unlikely (if not impossible) scenario for us.

How times have changed from 92 - 93

http://www.statto.com/football/stats...ague/1992-1993

MUFC top
AVFC 2nd
Norwich 3rd
Liverpool 6th
Arsenal 10th
Oldham 19th
Chelsea 11th

Ref Gabby if anyone came in for him in Jan with serious money I would take it , also NRC and Petrov could go to

Ashley Young will be brought on by MoN to become a BIG name for the future , hopefully we can keep him happy

I dont see it as an impossible scenario to be fair. Villa are a quality side, and i feel they can break into the top four this season... esp is MoN signs a couple more quality players in January and providing you keep hold of Young etc....

I think you going to take either Liverpools place or Arsenals.

Rumour as it that NRC wants to return to the smoke , I think MoN should cash in when the Jan window opens and take the money , no trying to change his mind like with G Barry .

He as never been a fave of mine

Aston Villa's London-born midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker has told pals he has no intention of signing a new deal with the Midlands club and is considering a return to the capital next summer. (Daily Mirror)

I wouldn't be sorry to see Reo-Coker go. He's a good runner but he's not got a lot of quality when he has the ball. Gardner performs a similar role but is a better passer, has a better shot on him and is a home-grown player.

As for today's game, there's probably never been a better time to play Chelsea than right now in terms of the injuries they have, but I'm not expecting too much from our lads. I think we can probably nick a point but any result at the big 4 is a massive bonus.

I think we made it quite easy for Chelsea to play today. Davies looked all at sea and I think giving Cuellar a go with Laursen is probably the way to go for a couple of games. We've got a run of four or five games now where we'll be starting as the favourites - we need to take advantage and stay up around 4th/5th. Hull will drop down and United will move up so I think we're in a fair position at the moment.

We were not at the races yesterday and it shows the gulf between the real top 4 and the pretenders

A reality check will hopefully help .

Liverpool do keep playing badly whilst still getting wins or draws , god help the EPL if they actually get their act together

NRC looked very sheepish this morning on SSN when asked if he had been offered a new contract like other Villa players

Well chuffed with the group we've got in the UEFA Cup. We've got some attractive games (looking forward to going to the Ajax game) but it's not an impossible task for us to qualify.

Jol says we're the favourites for the group, but I'd like to have qualified by the time we play Hamburg away in the last game. If we win both our home games, I think it'd be pretty unlikely to go out with six points.

The fixtures:

Ajax (h) - October 23
Slavia Prague (a) - November 6
Zilina (h) - December 4
Hamburg (a) - December 17

I see tickets for the Ajax game aren't available yet. I was going to get tickets for a game in November but may not be in the country so this would be a good game to get to before I go.

I actually think NRC has done well at villa and his contribution is very underated IMO. Hes a decent passer and tackler and often stays deep to allow Barry and Petrov to go forward. If theres a player i think we wouldn't miss if he were to be replaced i'd say it would be Petrov, as he rarely contributes much in the way of goals or assists and when i see villa play he seems to pass the ball backwards more than forwards and hes unbalancing the midfield often pushing NRC out wider on the right from his natural CM role. If our midfield was A.Young, Barry, NRC and Milner i think that'd be alot more balanced.

Disappointing result. Looks like Villa are starting to relinquish a top four position now inevitably.
