It was a drab game to say the least. We could have done with getting the three points because I have a feeling we'll struggle next weekend at Wigan, especially on the back of a European game on Thursday (for anyone going on Thursday btw, it's a strange KO time of 8:15pm - because of TV scheduling).

Best of the rest for the moment, but we're going to have improve a lot to stay there.

Disappointing result. Looks like Villa are starting to relinquish a top four position now inevitably.

I was quite happy with the result, although Jermain Defoe should have scored

God, this one hit the skids, nothing for five days....

Looks more like Villa are playing Chelsea tonight, Ajax isn't quite the same without the red and white.......

Deserved win, terrible way for the game to end though...

Well done on beating Ajax.

I'm actually not sure. The commentators said he'd be back for the midweek fixtures, but I thought I heard something about an U21 fixture... Hopefully it's not too serious, that's not a great way for a good win against Ajax to end.

Was a decent win considering Carew was ruled out as hes a big part of the way we play. I was a bit worried when i saw MON went with 1 up front at the start as we work alot better with a 442, but the early goal settled us down and then we went 2-1 up at a good time. Defensively i thought we did well as Ajax barely threatened us at all throughout the game. All in all though a good start to our european campaign.

Very true, and i dont want any of these future Man Utd stars picking up any potentially damaging injuries!

Was good to see a 40,000+ crowd for an early round UEFA cup tie. Good atmosphere as well.

Two giants of Europe bringing a bit of glamour back to the competition.

We'll get battered by Milan or Sevilla though, should we get that far

In my opinion, Villa ought not to be scared of anyone in the competition.

They have what it takes to win it - probably the strongest contender of all the English sides.

That was pretty emphatic. Even Sidwell scored

Hope the injury to Barry isn't too serious, not that it hurt us when he went off in the second half.

Hull aside, we're the best of the rest by a fair distance now. We now have two games I expect us to take four points from at the very least, Blackburn at home and Newcastle away.

We did well to win on Wednesday night; 3 games in 6 days, all against what I would class as hard to beat opposition. We did brilliantly to win all those games and we're the best of the rest (discounting Hull who I think will fall into the mid-table by Xmas) by some margin.

Hopefully a minimum of 4 points from the next 2 games (Newcastle away and Boro home), and then we've got Arsenal away and Man Utd home.

And yes cmyorks, United's game in hand is against Fulham (the missed fixture from the European Super Cup weekend).

Certainly Villa appear to be positioning themselves (and displacing my boys ) as the would-be next best outside the big four.

Without wanting to seem xenophobic, I am also impressed that Martin O'Neill seems to have tried to do it mostly through young or youngish English players.

If we can't crash the big four, and we certainly won't this season, I hope Villa give it a proper run. CL football at Villa Park is not totally out of the question in my opinion - Arsenal are amazing on their day but seem to me to lack the consistency of recent seasons.

Hope so Faxy. Today's results have definitely been encouraging for us - the teams below us didn't make any inroads into the gap between us and them, and Liverpool and Arsenal, the teams I reckon will finish 3rd and 4th this season, both lost.

We can go 3rd with a win on Monday night and miraculously only three points off the top. After 11 games, that would be pretty impressive.

Arsenal's flop today at Stoke is part of my case in point. Its never a bad day when Liverpool cock it up as well.

I would expect Villa to be good enough to polish Newcastle off so I will watch with interest on Monday.
