It strikes me there is a bit of harsh stick coming Carew's way on this thread.

Only a few weeks ago he was being lauded for a fantastic contribution. Now he goes to a lap dancing club and a few dodgy performances later, its being used to criticise him.
This isn't exactly surprising though Faxy. Fans aren't exactly going to be on the side of someone who is given a 'rest' but then spends that time out at a lap dancing club, especially if when he comes back, he doesn't seem to be putting the effort in.

Carew had stages like this last season where he looked disinterested, but then he'd come up with a performance like the one he gave in the Blues game. We have to hope he hits a good run of form again soon, because he's going to be crucial for us against the likes of United and Arsenal.

In the bigger picture, I think Carew is critical to Villa's style of play. He kind of occupies people freeing room for others and has fine technical skills.
Agreed (see my post above).

I am equally confused as to how some of you lot think Doyle will somehow be an improvement too. If you are looking for a championship striker, I would not look too much further than Sylvain Ebanks-Blake if you want to add to the firepower. But I think Villa could be looking for someone a bit better than him too.
Doyle is a quality striker. Given the right service I'm convinced he can score 15/20 goals a season, and he's also very quick, and he's not bad in the air either. The only thing he lacks is a lot of experience playing at the top level.

MON only buys British generally, and out of the British strikers available, Doyle and Defoe are the two best in my opinion.

Yesterday the result was more important than the performance. Villa could go an awful long way in the UEFA Cup, in my opinion.
I hope so. We need to try and make sure we win the group to avoid the sides coming in from the CL.

I also agree with cooperman and demo on Guzan. He looks a very capable reserve to me.
He did look very solid. Made a few good saves, and his distribution was good. He looks a capable understudy for Friedel.

All of a sudden things aren't looking so promising with Arsenal and Man utd to come next after losing to Boro and Newcastle.

As usual at about this time every year we seem to hit a slump.

Who'd have thought that after the last 2 games, we would beat Arsenal. I didn't even listen for the score today because I thought we would get mullered but what a result!!

Apparently Gabby's goal was immense.

The Gabby goal was fantastic , he was super fast to beat Gallas to the ball and hit it so sweetly , low and hard

If only we had taken more points from the easier games and beaten Stoke , Newcastle and Middlesboro and got more from the Portsmouth and Liverpool draws then we would be top of the tree

Didn't ecxpect owt from the Chelsea game

Liverpool have struggled in games , like the 2nd half of todays Bolton game but still got the results and points

I thought I'd posted in here last week, apparently not We were awesome last week, such a solid performance defensively and we looked really dangerous going forward.

It'll be interesting to see how we get on today. I'm hopeful of a point at least.

We seem to be blowing hot and cold , I have a feeling today will be a "Cold" day and we will get nothing , I hope I am wrong .

Hopefully the "Interested" Carew will be playing

I thought we did alright, a draw was a fair result.

This had to be the official "match with the most fouls given for obstruction" in the history of football. Both teams were equally guilty although I did feel that Ronaldo didn't help himself at all tonight, he seemed to be back to his old tricks of staying down for ages.

I didn't think it was a penalty on Gabby, however, it was clearly a free kick as if Vidic didn't have his arms all over Gabby, he wouldn't have caught up with him. Never a penalty though, Vidic got the ball when the ball was in the box.

Good point for us and perhaps United will see it as a couple dropped. A much better performance second half from us.

Great defensive display I'm more than happy with the result given our history against 'em. Up to 4th now. And it's always good to see Fergie seething with rage .

Great atmosphere was played like a cup final.

Another 0-0. Not a great result for us given the opportunities that we wasted. We missed Carew today and im pretty sure he would of buried at least 1 of the 3 good headed chances barry and sidwell missed between them had he been playing. Without him i just think we arent as potent in the final third.

Three clean sheets in a row seems like something of a miracle given the number of goals we were conceding earlier in the season, but we really seem to be struggling in front of goal.

I guess looking on the positive side of things, it's unlikely we'll lose ground on Arsenal this weekend, but this was a chance to create a fairly big gap between us.

What happened today? You guys completely buggered up my betting! Im just speculating but has something gone wrong up front? (maybe Young fancies a move to United after all! )

Not a good result but class performances from Millner and Cueller, Carews presence was definitely missed.

We created enough chances, unfortunately it seems that Sidwell and Barry can't score with free headers from six yards out.

To be frank, if I was a Villa fan, I'd be a bit pissed off.

They seem to be folding when there is a real opportunity to make ground on the teams above them, or in this case pull away in fourth.

I really believe they miss the presence of John Carew up front. I'm sure it makes Gabby more effective to have him in the mix.

They have a real chance of the CL and results like this won't help them. I call it two points dropped, undoubtedly, for all that Fulham are far more resolute these days under Hodgson.

I agree points lost against Newcastle , Middlesboro , Fulham and Stoke would have made a big difference to our points tally .

There is no doubt the team plays better with a good target man

Old gossip.......

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has told John Carew he is no longer an automatic first-choice pick as a striker. (Various)
from the BBC the day AFTER Carew stated he wanted to end his career at Villa

We're lucky we're not behind at half-time, the first five minutes aside, Everton have completely overrun us in midfield. We're not winning any of the physical battles and it looks like it's only a matter of time before they get a second.

Great hit by Sidwell, but that's all he's done so far.

One of the worst Villa performances I've ever seen, yet we somehow managed to score three goals and win. I'd have taken a draw at HT without a doubt, never thought we could win it.

Fantastic composure by Ash to finish that off.

We won't be top 4 playing like we did today against an awful Everton team.
