Hi,

Got my wife an iphone today and have a couple of simple questions that I would be very grateful for someone to answer.

1) Can you send picture messages ( MMS ) via text ? I know you can send pics by e-mail but this is of no use to my wife who wants to send pics from phone to phone.

2) Can you change the ringtone to one of your music tracks or download ringtones from itunes? I have looked on itunes but can't find any !!!!

I seem to remember reading if you download a track, you would have to download it again to use it as a ringtone. I might be wrong though. Sorry I can't help more, I'm sure someone will be more help!

Thankyou very much for your replies so far.

One other quick question...

can you change the settings so that the text of your message doesn't appear on the display of your phone until you open it?

Rob, the inabilty of the iPhone to send pics by MMS is one of its major shortcomings. To be honest I'm surprised that you didn't discover this when doing your handset research.

The short answer to both is YES.....
but not easily!

To send MMS, the phone will need to be 'jailbroken' then there is an app (Swirly MMS) that can be installed to enable you to send MMS. If you don't fancy a spot of jailbraking, I'm sure some bright spark will be working on a MMS application right now (with the SDK that Apple have released). The software update scheduled in June will add an App Store icon to the phone so that you can download free or bought application that (I think) will revolutionise an already amazing phone.

There is a workaround to add custom ringtones (Macrumors tutorial) It's quite easy (and free). You can use ANY MP3 file - but they can only be about 30 seconds long.

I've dropped a few custom ringtones on using this method and they work a treat. You can even use them as alarm tones to wake you up in a morning....

Other than that, my iPhone is completely how Apple want me to have it, although I do have the latest software 1.1.4. I can't wait for June, and version 2 of the software!

there's no way that i know of to stop this.

as for the ringtones, for some reason there don't seem to have appeared in the uk itunes store yet.

That's an interesting question, as far as I know you can't, but I can see why that might be a problem to some (who have something to hide !).

Settings, General, Passcode Lock - set 'Show SMS Preview' to off...but it only has an affect when the phone is locked (with a press of the top button).

For someone who has nothing but negative things to say about the iphone, you seem to post a hell of a lot in threads concerning it.

Why would that be?

Not true. It's an interesting bit of kit and I have made some complimentary comments about it. You just haven't seen 'em.

Me too.

I reckon they need a 'Playa' app to disable the SMS preview.

( not that I'm saying I'm a player)

So? There are also about the N95 (which Ricardo vehemently defends to the point of being daft - ie. the N95 battery is great, you only need to charge it up once a week, come one!) The LG has a horrid interface.

No handset it perfect, the iPhone is closer to it than any other I've used though.
