Don't know how you can say that. No-one (other than Steve Jobs possibly) knows what the Apple/O2 policy will be in a year's time - that is infinity in this business, particularly where Apple is involved, just not worth speculating. I'd also be very surprised if very many people who read this forum ever keep a phone as long as 18 months, so what's the big issue ?

i did expressly state no-one knows for sure but that there is nothing from o2 or apple to say that it would be unlocked at the end of the contract.

as to your saying that it's not an issue because not many people will keep an phone more than 18 months, that may be the case but that doesn't mean that it would be correct or green to render a piece of technology redundant (unless a further contract is taken out) after 18 months.

It would be cool if at the very least they allowed it to be converted to an iPod Touch even if you cannot use it as a phone.

A policy like this is forcing people to hack, and if/when they come to buy another one down the line - they might think sod all this contract business I might as well just hack it.

Anyway thanks for the responses

it will still be activated (unless it has been restored) so it will still work as an ipod.

OK thanks that's reassuring

I will no doubt get a better model for myself but I would still like to hand the old one to the kids / wife

i think a lot of people would quite reasonably say that having paid full price for the phone, and having fulfilled a long contract commitment, they would like to pass on the phone to a family member unlocked.
