Sony Bravia - will it work abroad?

I called Sony about whether my 32inch Sony Bravia would work in Switzerland (I'm moving there). Unbelievably, Sony said they couldn't help me and had no information for me...

Does anyone know whether it's possible to receive cable over there on a UK TV?

Thanks!

If i remember rightly, when you tune a TV in, you can select what country you are in inside the EU. Could always check the Sony website I'd have thought

In the manual analogue tuning section on the tv do you get the choice of tv system such as PAL-I/PAL-B/PAL-G? If you do the set should work abroad. If not it could be a bit tricky. If you can try asking Nigel Goodwin on a pm as he is very clued up on sony sets.

Although he will probably reply fairly quickly here anyway!

As far as I'm aware, Sony TV's sold in Europe are all a single model, and you select the country you want when you first turn it on - so it should be fine.

The 'Sony' helpline isn't even run by Sony, they outsourced it, and all they can do is read off the 'idiot chart' on screen (just like Sky CS's do).

Surely if you want to receive cable then you will have some form of decoder box to plug into? Which will likely have a SCART socket on it. In which case it won't matter what flavour of PAL they use as you won't be receiving via an aerial anyway.

Or am I missing something blindingly obvious?

I had to collect my daughter from school, supposedly at 6:30 (she'd been to Cambridge Uni on a Maths Challenge day) - in the event she didn't get back until almost 8:00

As for Cambridge, she was less than impressed - the 'Maths Challenge' turned out to be a 'Cambridge Propaganda' day. She wasn't greatly impressed with the college at all either, so at least that's one crossed off the list!

Cable tv in most countries is picked up directly by the tv, I am not sure how they encrypt what you haven't paid for so I suppose there is some sort of basic package which covers most needs as it is the only way to watch tv in many places.
