Potatoes going green - are Waitrose the worst offenders?
Prompted by the frequent threads in GD about favourite supermarkets, does anyone else who shops in Waitrose find that the potatoes they sell go green very quickly?
I never know what to do with greenish potatoes: cut off the green bits or throw the whole spud away? What are the health risks involved? |

No, I shop in Waitrose and have not noticed this, but you can eat them if they do with no problems.

I'd like to know if green potatoes are bad for you too.
Tesco spuds are all completely tasteless...their new potatoes are the worst. And bizarrely, you can cook them for hours and they still stay tatseless and hard.

I like rooster tots (dont laugh)
but I have one of those cotton bags to store them in. I put the bag of tots in a dark cupboard. It seems to work.Plastic bags are awful. makes the spuds sweat. |

I think most supermarkets are guilty of this - Tesco especially. They are also full of black patches when you cut into them. The answer is to buy them off the market or a green grocers (if you can find one these days), but I suppose the supermarkets are too convenient for us.

Dont eat the green bits unless you want to die. Potatoes are in the same family and Deadly Nightshade. The chemical in those that kill you exist in the entire family, and when potato goes green this chemical is at a higher level

I buy my potatoes in Waitrose and it's very rare to get green ones. The most important thing is not to store them in the plastic bag. I put them into a paper carrier bag and then in a dark cupboard.

Yes, I always store them in a cupboard but usually in the bag they're sold in. It does always seem to be Waitrose potatoes that go green in my experience, it made me wonder if it's because in Waitrose the potatoes are displayed in a very brightly lit area opposite a door which lets in natural light when it's opened. On the other hand, why would they go green in my cupboard if they haven't gone green in the shop?
