I have connected my SONY RDRGX350 to my SONY BRAVIA via an HDMI lead, But as my ageing 5.1 amp system doesnt have a digital phono input, and the new RDRGX350 doesnt have an OPTICAL OUTPUT. i cant get a 5.1 signal to the surround amp.
I have tried connecting the OPTICAL OUTPUT of the BRAVIA to the surround amp. but that isnt in 5.1, Am i correct in thinking that the HDMI connection from my DVD player to my BRAVIA connot carry a 5.1 audio signal.

The only way round this is to buy a DIGITAL PHONO to OPTICAL converter...............do these things work well

Since the TV is strictly a stereo device there is no point the DVD poking 5.1 audio up the HDMI lead. The telly wouldn't know what to do with it anyway.

There is no reason to supose a converter would not work well. Basically as it's digital it either translates pulses of electricity into pulse of light or vice versa. And provided the pulses coming out exactly match the pulses going in then it has done it's job.

And believe me you will very soon know when it isn't working. Contrary to what you might read in magazines like What HiFi a poor digital interconnect is not subtle. It sounds pretty horrible. Beleive me i have worked with digital audio professionally since the 80s.

I have heard what happens when the bit of wire screws up the data stream and it is not a slight muddying of the bass or less crisp treble or anything like that at all. Most likely it is an almighty pop swiftly followed by the speaker cones landing on the floor (if you like to compete with a Motorhead gig on the volume front )

They work perfectly well, SPDIF and optical are exactly the same signal, just converted with an LED and a photo-transistor.

I am about to invest in a 5.1 audio system to connect to my Bravia TV. Does the Bravia optical output provide the 5.1 surround sound. My Sony manual does not even mention 5.1.

Thanks.

There are NO 5.1 surround sound broadcasts on terrestrial television. The nearest you will get is a stereo signal encoded with Dolby ProLogic.

So the output of the TV will be stereo only, hence why there is no mention in the manual.

Thanks chrisjr. As you can tell I'm a novice here. I'm on a TV cable system if that makes a difference. I understood that from talking to people and the message thread here that the TV will output 5.1 from its own tuner. So if there are no 5.1 broadcasts why would it do this? Future proofing? Thanks.
