Hi All,

I have a full HD LCD tv, an upscaling DVD player and a SD Sky+ box.

I have connected the sky box via scart direct to the tv, and have used the second sky scart to go down to the upscaling dvd player and then back to the tv via an hdmi cable.

My problem is that the picture is worse(I thought it would be better!!!) via the upscaling dvd player than direct via the scart......this is so even if i switch the outputs on the back of the sky box (i.e. send the RGB signal to the upscaling dvd player and then to the tv via hdmi).

Could anyone please advise me the best way to connect these together, and can I make use of the upscaling dvd player to improve the SD Sky signal?

By the way, the dvd player upscales to 1080i and the TV will switch to any resolution it sees right up to 1080p.

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for any help with this.

bishy.

you dont say if its a dvd recorder.

You should take out the scart from sky to dvd and connect directly to the tv as the interconnections clearly arent working.

Your TV already upscales the picture from the Sky+ box, why would you think your DVD might do a better job?.

Assuming your TV is a decent one?, simply connect via RGB SCART and that's as good as you can get.

Hi Nigel & Hamster,

Thanks for the replies,

Hamster, yes it is a dvd recorder.

Nigel, thanks, of course now that you say it, it is obvious that the TV is doing the upscaling, so that is as good as I'm going to get. However, as the dvd machine is a recorder, what's the best way to get that into the loop?........Am I right in saying that the 'vcr' scart output from the Sky + box is inferior to the 'TV' scart out?.......if so, is there another way of connecting it to the Sky+ box?

Sorry to ask so many questions.

Thanks again for your help.

Assuming your DVDR can record RGB and has RGB pass through.

Sky+ TV SCART ---> DVDR input SCART (prob AV1)
DVDR output SCART (prob AV2) ---> TV RGB SCART

DVDR HDMI --> TV

With this setup you can record in RGB from the Sky+. You don't say what model the DVDR is but it may be that you can't record onto the DVDR whilst watching Sky but that is what the Sky+ is for anyway.

If you connect the DVDR to the Sky+ VCR SCART you can only ever record (or upscale) from the inferior composite signal.

With the setup I've suggested you can directly compare watching Sky via upscaled HDMI or with the DVDR in standby via RGB SCART. I suggest you will see little or no difference (SCART may even be better) and so will just leave the DVDR in standby whilst watching Sky+ - that's what I do. Watching DVDs over HDMI is more likely to show an improvement over SCART than Sky (try 576p as well as 720p/1080i/108p) but even here this is not guaranteed.

Hi Bobcar,

Thanks for the reply and help. I will try your suggestions out this evening.

BTW am I likely to get a better picture using av plugs (or RCA or banana plugs as we used to call them !!!!!!)

Thanks again for all the help.

They are called 'phono plugs' in the UK, 'RCA plugs' in the USA, and 'banana plugs' are something completely different.

Assuming it's a single yellow socket, plus read and white for audio, it's the lowest quality possible connection you can use.

Hi Nigel again,

Thanks for sorting that out..........I shall not bother trying to use them then.

I have connected everything up the way that you all advised me, and everything seems to be much better now, so thanks to you and to everyone that tried to help.

Thanks again and I'll speak to you soon.
