o2 N81 signal problems

I have today upgraded my phone to the Nokia N81. I've fully charged the phone without the sim card and booted it up with the sim card. The only problem is that it doesn't connect to o2 in a area which has a strong signal. Does anyone know how I can get the phone to work? Is my phone a duff one and if so what can I do?

When you turn on the phone what messages appear on the screen? Or does it show no signal strength? Have you tried taking the SIM out and putting it back again? Was this a SIM free phone or an upgrade?

Cheers for your reply prking

When I turn the phone on no messages appear and even with cell info turned on, no network name appears or strength.

I tried cleaning the sim card, playing with the network selection menu and doing a 'sim swap' but no luck. The phone was a upgrade from the O2 store in Oxford.

Is the sim card you are using the one you used previously or is it the new one that came in the box?

If its the new one that came in the box you will need to call o2 customer service (202 from your mobile) to get them to activate it or use your old sim.

Does a signal strength show? If there is a X through the signal strength the phone will be in flight mode.

I'm using the sim card that is currently working fine with full strength in old phone. I don't think the N81 is in flight mode.

If you do a manual network scan does O2 appear in the list. If so, what happens when you try to select it?

O2 Uk does appear and when I select it says 'No access'.

Thankyou for your help people. I've got the phone working after ordering and activing a 3G sim card.
