Regarding the high speed copy function on the Panny Hard drive machines is there any picture quality loss when copying (High speed) either from HDD to RAM or back from RAM to HDD....!!!

High speed copying is the only lossless form of HDD to DVD copying to any disc type.

RAM discs have the advantage that you can endlessly bounce losslessly from HDD to DVD to HDD etc.. and always at high speed.

Note that because High speed copying is pure digital cloning, that any and all Chapter marks go with and stay with the copy.

In real time copying, everything is re-encoded and suffers a loss and all chapter marks are lost.
Discs made this way are auto chaptered at the finalisation stage: at 5 minute intervals for -discs types and at 8 minute intervals for + disc types.

I've always known Gavtech's comments to be accurate and reliable, BUT...
I can high speed copy from DVD RAM to HDD, but then my Panasonic refuses to copy that same file at high speed to DVD-R.
I can never understand why only these files, of all my files, have to be copied in real time. It's really put me off DVD RAM as a flexible medium, as they seem to be best suited only to (very expensive) archiving.

I think the problem is probably that you do not have the 'Record for high speed copying' setting ON... but this depends on model as to whether it is even present.

I have a DMR EH80V.
It does have a 'Record for high speed copying' setting and that is set 'On'.

I can happily record at high speed most programs from the hard disk to DVD -R, such as those programs recorded via its own tuner, or External Link or dubbed from its VHS unit.
I can also dub at high speed from a DVD-RAM to hard disk.
I have a collection of DVD-RAM programs, and I want to get them onto DVD -R. My frustration is that this Panny does a lossless copy from DVD-RAM to HD, but then it won't do a lossless copy of those programs at high speed from HD to DVD -R.
Where's the logic in that?

Apologies for my carelessness. I was in a hurry when I misread your earlier post... I thought you were saying you could not high speed copy back from RAM to HDD... but I see you were meaning later copying back to DVD-R.

Unfortunately there is no workaround to this.

It is not a problem of the Panasonic machine as such, but arises because of the fundamental incompatibility between VR Mode recordings [which is used on RAM and RW type discs] and Video Mode - which is used on DVD-R discs.


You might want to look into the possibility of PC manipulation of RAM discs files... You need a RAM Reader/Writer drive and Panasonic's DVDMovieAlbum SE software... [ Free download ]
There are threads about it in this section of the forum.

Under some circumstances you can get the files off losslessly ... and there is usually plenty of other software about that will make it almost certain.

I am tending to do more PC related recording where a recorded program is simply a steam of bits that can be copied losslessly at will. It's only when you have to write to some DVD medium that you have to be concerned about the umteen different formats.
And it's a pity the Panasonics can't write "PC like" files to their HDD or to an ethernet or USB port.
For the moment we live in two incompatible parallel universes. Maybe the Panasonic (and other) recorders will soon be obsoleted by the unstoppable PC movement.
