Samsung DVD Recorder
Has anyone here had or got a Samsung DVD Recorder. are they reliable? My LCD tv is Samsung so i thought getting a DVD Recorder which is the same brand may be a good idea. Im looking for one with upscaling.
Any advice or if you can recommend any other brands, thanks. |

Don't worry about getting the same brand - it doesn't make any real difference. Some manufacturers such as Panasonic have special control methods between TV and recorder but these are not usually much use.
Just choose what you think is the best DVDR for the price you're willing to pay. Upscaling may not help your picture at all though most seem to come with this feature now anyway. Also consider whether you really want a DVDR or whether a PVR would be more useful to you. |

I currently have a Samsung DVD-R119 recorder which is just over 2 years old, only a basic model which i use for copying programmes off sky+ so I can't comment on timer recording etc but i've had no problems with it. Only complaint I have is that fast forwarding and rewinding isn't very smooth.
As John Currie says though Panasonic and Sony are probably the best and also Pioneer are good but I can't say i've noticed any models from them recently. |

I had a r119, and the rf modulator went within a month. But I now have a hr-734 and have had no problems with it at all. Had it for about a year and half and its been fine. I would say buy a samsung, there not just as good as a panasonic or a pioneer, or sony. But they are perfect mid market, there is not as cheap and crappy as the low end, and not got the high price of a high end.
I'll have to say about sony as well, even though they have a good reputation and most of my sony stuff is perfect. My sony home cinema dvd player refuses to play discs and it was tempremental and slow before that. But it did give up 2 or 3 years of average service. Really every brand is going to have it' s horror stories though. |

Panasonic stuff is usually good - but as Nigel Goodwin and others have pointed out Panasonic had a problem on some models with the PSU failing, so even the best aren't infalliable. I've not seen anything on this or any other board suggesting there is an inherent problem with any of Samsung's DVDRs.... |

Erm.... care to provide some evidence to support that assertion ?

I know the Panasonic models that give trouble having repaired a few but their latest models are better. |

Have a look at this thread here http://www.avforums.com/forums/showt...=529199&page=2 and here
I know the Panasonic models that give trouble having repaired a few but their latest models are better. Nobody seems to be complaining about basic reliability, instead the issues seem to be one of usability not quality. And usability is highly subjective - what is easy for one person to use may be impossible for somebody else. |

With respect, neither of those links suggest that all Samsung's 'don't have a good reputation.'
