I had a similar thing too when I downloaded e-Linker (2.5) on Vista and hopefully what I've written below may help you. I installed it from my standard user account and let UAC prompt me for an Administrator password when needed.
When I'd installed the app and driver, I connected the USB lead and brought the Humax out of standby.
Device Manager showed it under Unrecognised Devices. It seemed in my case that the driver didn’t get installed properly because it is unsigned.
Basically I had to force it to install the driver properly. Unfortunately it was quite a while ago so what you see below is me trying to remember what I did from memory:
Right click on the Humax device.
Click Update Driver Software.
Click Browse the computer for driver software.
When a list of manufacturers and hardware appears, click Show all.
Click Humax.
Click Humax STB.
When Windows can’t verify the publisher of this driver software appears, click Install this driver anyway.
When The software for this device has been successfully installed appears, click Close.
Device Manager should now show the Humax in its own right and indicate the device is working properly.
I did manage to get communication between the Humax and PC but after a few minutes into transmission, e-Linker would give up because of transmission errors. I was trying to transfer 2.2GB of a 1 hour programme. For a shorter programme it would have probably worked okay.
But even to get that far I had to raise e-Linker's process priority from Task Manager to Realtime (and do that from Administrator because a standard user account will only raise it to High even though it appears it has raised it to Realtime). I also had to stop my Internet Security software and ensure nothing else was running.
So I turned to Humax Media Controller instead. This installs a different driver for the Humax so I had to do an Uninstall Driver from Device Manager and tick the "delete from system (or whatever it is called)" to ensure the e-Linker driver was off my system completely before I installed the one from Humax Media Controller.
The Humax Media Controller app is DOS command-line based but is incredibly easy to use and has error recovery built in. It does take a long time to transfer files because it has one or more passes through the file until every error is resolved. But it does succeed where e-Linker failed.
