Every one of Pixie Lott's songs reminds me of another song but I can never quite put my finger on it.

I don't think she meant that....

IMO, she reminds me of Duffy.

All Saints' Never Ever and Pure and Simple by Hear'Say are both based on the melody and chords from Amazing Grace. Try singing Amazing Grace slowly along with either - it works.

Sugababes' Push The Button reminds me of Temptation by New Order.

Me thinks too many of you lot listen to too much generic rock OR on the other hand generic pop

That's why this sort of plagarism thing exists. These rock or pop artists pick sounds that make people (the majority of music buying public) comfortable listening too.It happens in any genre of music. From Contemporary pop to Black / Death / Extreme Metal (not sure that's a comfortable listen mind - but you know what I mean). That's what people generally call generic. There is always one or two generic sounding track that sort of stands out, though usually. The impact those outstanding tracks make usually diminishes over time as artists try to formalise those sounds - sadly.

Generally, artists that come up with some genuinely new interesting sounds don't get the recognition they deserve. As said above the majority of people generally like listening to sounds they are familiar with. It's a fact of life sadly.
Personally I don't mind a little bit of a generic sound but I do like artists who try to expand their sound a little.Apart from the odd few artists there are very few artists who try to push the boundaries. There are alot of mash up of sounds (genre blending) but very little true innovation, generally.

I think this is a bit harsh. In the Western musical system, there are only eight notes, and a lot of these songs which sound the same (like the list of songs inspired by Pachelbel's Canon upthread) just make use of the same chord progression. I don't think it's even copying really, just using a sequence of chords which works. I suspect the same situation exists in Chinese and Indian music, although as they use a different scale, it's harder for us to spot unless we are "in the know".

That said, innovation is always good, and there are plenty of artists out their ploughing their own furrow. Just because they don't get mentioned in threads like this, doesn't mean no-one is listening to them.

Boys and Girls sounds like Shut Up and Drive
I think Cry Me Out sounds a bit like I'm With You by Avril Lavigne.

Disagree sorry there is alot of music out there today that is released because it has a familiar / safe sound to it.Pete Waterman is the ultimate culprit of doing this - but as I said it happens in every genre. It's all about cashing in on a sound / chord sequence / vocal line etc. that has been popular in the past.

Ricky Nelson's Summertime http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izsVZup02-4 has a somewhat familiar bassline

Any Deep Purple fans out there?

Also, in terms of generic music the most familiar chord progression is I-VI-IV-V

This is a great example of it - Axis of Awesome http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHBVnMf2t7w

Repo the Genetic Opera's Zydrate Anatomy- a jolly little song about surgery/drug addicts having sex with their dealer, with legalised assassination coming in at the end- has almost the same tune as the Muffin Man.

It doesn't feel especially strange when you watch it in the context of the film, either. It's only afterwards when you stop to think that you realise what the writers did.

Not a song similarity but...

Paul McCartney's Christmas Time has a sound in it which sounds almost exactly like the sound you hear on the Dreamcast BIOS menu screen.

Am I the only person who has noticed this?

I think Gravity by Pixie Lott sounds a lot like No Air by Jordin Sparks.

Wow, now you mention that, it does a bit. They're both amazing songs. And Boys and Girls does sound a lot like a Rihanna song (but they're both awesome too).

Already Gone and Halo are the most noticeable though. They're pretty much exactly the same song, and you can sing moth melodies to both instrumentals almost perfectly, which is quite shocking. I think Beyonce got off easily though, because her song got released first.

Boom Boom Pow also sounds like Boom Dynamite and Planet Rock (one of the BEPs said they based the song's beat off Planet Rock's, so that makes sense).

Also, Just Dance and Poker Face sound exactly the same to me. Luckily Bad Romance and Telephone have been a bit more distinguishable.

Also, a lot of people compare Tik Tok to Uffie's songs, but I really think the biggest similarity is between Tik Tok and Love at First Sight, by Kylie Minogue.

I never realised that before, but I agree.
As regards Oasis, you can play the exact same chords for Wonderwall and Whatever.
