Rachel and Fran both come over on screen as being almost exaggerated in their acting styles - and I suspect it is because of their training.

TV acting is always much 'smaller' than that needed for a stage like Drury Lane”

Good point - Sarah mentioned last night that she had been told by ALW to tone it down for the TV audience - only to be told by BH that he wasn't sure that she could connect with the back row of a theatre audience!! The girl can't win!

Most of the songs chosen have not been musical theatre numbers. Given the trite nature of a lot of the lyrics they have been asked to sing, it is almost impossible to judge that side of them.

Pop song lyrics are not meant to be acted in the same way that numbers from musicals are.

There should be more emphasis on acting in these types of shows - but that might not been so 'exciting' for a non-specialist audience

so to me that means the judges are not talking.......if one of the other has asked one of the girls to do something....the others should be looking out for it.....not pick the change up as a fault...makes them look like they cant communicate

I am not attacking anyone with my comment about a non-specialist audience

I don't believe that the majority of viewers are avid MT fans - they are watching for the reality/competitive aspects of it all

They might find too many acting tests very off-putting

This is probably the reason why we don't have a reality casting show for the next big production of Hamlet or Macbeth

ok Ill give you that one...........

but I know a good performance when I see it.......

The big problem with this type of show is that a good performance of a certain number can be cited as someone's ability to take on a whole role - and that isn't always certain.

I would love to see more duets/scenes being done. We never really see them interact properly and in Oliver! that is so key

Thats true and was true on the Maria's and Josephs, thats not going to change......they have found away to interact ( if every so slightly) with the audience making them believe they have a stake in this..

Sam has got a chorography number, is wearing very revealing suggestive outfits and is the fav with the Olivers..........do you think this is by chance

Sam and Jessie would be fine as Bet - and could aspire after a year of west end life to step up

But Sam can't sing in tune

She couldn't maintain her singing when dancing and completely lost the middle of her number

She is closest in age to the Olivers - that might explain something

yea, but BH wets himself everytime she is on, so do you really think he is paying attention.....to her singing at least.

Awl thinks its brilliant..........I agree with you.......but we are in the minority I think

I would love to get the voting numbers

It would be so illuminating - we might all be worrying over nothing

well I read they gave 150 thousand to the acting bursary and if that was half (24p) of the cost of the last show then they didnt get as many votes as I thought they would have. There was over 10 million watching the show.

Makes you wonder why they dont give us the numbers......they seem fair keen on telling the person who got the least votes on screen so why not the numbers......maybe be too influencing for the wrong Nancy

I think it is 14p per vote... but no matter

Perhaps we should petition under the Freedom of Information Act for the totals!

There is another ALW project underway at the moment - Phantom 2 - the story will centre around the daughter of Christine... a chance for a young perfomer maybe?

Yes I think AWL is using this show to audition for other projects

From the BBC Oliver site:

Calls cost 25p per call from a BT landline and from other operators may vary, calls from mobiles will be considerably higher. 14p per call will go towards the BBC performing Arts Fund, which gives bursaries to aspiring performers and musicians across the country, The remaining cost of the call goes towards charges and administrative costs to the service provider, BT (the company that provides the call voting platform) and in tax. We reserve the right to cancel or suspend voting at any time.

I just think there's a big difference between acting out pop songs and acting a MT song which is part of a flowing narrative.

Pop songs are often personal, written by a writer wanting to convey something relevant to their lives - or alternatively just for good entertainment's sake.

In MT the song is part of a bigger story, told by a character, not a performer. What comes before and goes after the song adds to the character and performance.

When I said we hadn't seen much acting - I meant Nancy acting - not just Rachel pretending to be Christina Aguilera and falling to her knees in an OTT manner. And not just acting through songs - as far as I know, Nancy has a lot of scenes in Oliver - spoken scenes.

I'm interested about tonight's task.

Usually when it gets to this stage I start voting (when I've got a clearer idea of who I really like.) But I can't be bothered at the moment!

There's such an air of inevitability about this series - like you say - why waste the money?

Who did you want to win ADWD? Or Maria for that matter?

well to win or who was the best...........Lee was the best choice for Jospeh - but Daniel was by far the superior performer............Maria - Connie was the front runner

what about you?
Mamaboogie

I agree - with Maria, I liked Connie pretty much from the beginning.

With Joseph - Lee was the right Joseph in the end. But I really like Daniel - personality and amazing voice - I'm so happy that he's been successful.

But like I said, I also rooted for young Ben (so did the whole of Scarborough!) and think he's ended up in the perfect show for him.

I can understand in a way, that some people can't see certain contestants in the role of Nancy - some people are destined for greater things!

I think Ben struggled with holding his vocal at times but he has landed on his feet,,,,,,Joseph is not as challenging, Im glad Daniel landed on his feet.......a few times....lol
