W960i VoIP on o2
Hi All
I have a new SE w960i on an o2 contract. One of the things I had hoped to use it for was skype via Fring and the free Wifi connections that are available in some hotels that I end up in. Unfortunately, Fring reports that: "The firmware on this device does not support VOIP call". I have the latest update from SE's update service. I strongly suspect that O2 have crippled this part of the phone, to prevent people using their 3g bandwidth for VOIP (fair enough) and also to encourage users to pay for expensive foreign calls (not quite so fair enough!). Is there any way to fix this? Perhaps a different version of the firmware somehow? All input gratefully received! Charlie |

In the past O2 phones have had very light branding (a few wallpapers/themes etc) so it would be a big change for them to start disabling features.

It seems I am not alone in experiencing this problem!

Have you tried any other VOIP clients? This would help narrow down the problem.

My O2 phone came with a changed wallpaper and theme. Nothing too serious, they don't mess with the firmware or any features.

That's what made me think it was a Fring problem. (Also, if a provider wanted to stop VOIP it would be much easier and cheaper to block the ports rather than have custom firmware on some phones). I would be interested to know the outcome.

I would love to try another VOIP client- but I am struggling to find one for UIQ3! I had a go with iskoot, but that isn't one...
Any suggestions? Charlie |

I found Optimobile Uniphone which seems to be open source. Were O2 able to shed any light on the subject?

hi prking
I can't find a free download of uniphone, and I'm unwilling to spend money on something that's unlikely to work! I don't want to involve o2 , as there's something in the terms and conditions about voip. To protect their 3g capacity no doubt. I'd only use it over wifi, mind. More input welcomed! Charlie |

Hello!
Well, not that I'd try anything like this, because it probably is a breach of o2's t+cs, but there is a solution, for anyone still struggling with this: http://forums.se-nse.net/index.php?showtopic=22490&st=0 To de-brand the phone, and then update using seus as normal. Fring will work. As far as I know. Cheerio! Charlie |
